All of us clamouring for food, water, space and the triumphant benefits of the all-conquering “global economy”, which the Western powers had been cajoling, threatening or enticing the rest of the world into since the dawn of the age of empires. Now this economy encompassed everything, everywhere and everyone on Earth. There was no escape, even on the highest peaks or in the deepest forests, from its products, its worldview or its 15G connectivity. The entire planet, from mahogany trees to office workers, was now a “resource”, to be eyed and totted up for the necessary and beneficial growth of the global machine.

Afghanistan imposes near-nationwide curfew to curb sweeping Taliban offensive
Afghan authorities on Saturday imposed a night-time curfew across 31 of the country’s 34 provinces to curb surging violence unleashed by a sweeping Taliban offensive in recent months, the interior ministry said.
The widespread Taliban offensive has seen the insurgents capture key border crossings, dozens of districts and encircle several provincial capitals since early May.
“To curb violence and limit the Taliban movements a night curfew has been imposed in 31 provinces across the country,” except in Kabul, Panjshir and Nangarhar, the interior ministry said in a statement.
With the withdrawal of American-led foreign forces all but complete, the resurgent Taliban now controls about half of Afghanistan’s roughly 400 districts.
After a brief lull in violence during this week’s Muslim holidays of Eid al-Adha, fighting continued again with the authorities claiming to have killed more than 260 Taliban fighters in the past 24 hours across several provinces.
Both the authorities and the Taliban exaggerate their claims, which cannot be independently verified.

Conservatives and religious groups are voicing disapproval as Chicago public schools are set to start distributing condoms in elementary institutions when students return to in-person learning.
In December, city leaders approved a policy to mandate condom and menstrual pad dispersal in all schools that teach students in the fifth grade or above. The move will apply to nearly all of the Windy City’s over 600 learning institutions, and students will first feel the effects of the proposal next month.

A restaurant that cheered rioters who burned down its building during the George Floyd riots now complains that Minneapolis has too much crime after being victimized again.
“Let my building burn,” immigrant restaurant owner Ruhel Islam declared as his business was set ablaze during anti-police protests last summer. “Justice needs to be served, put those officers in jail,” he said on Facebook. His daughter, Hafsa Islam, even penned an op-ed for The Washington Post praising those who torched Gandhi Mahal, their restaurant.
