Ottawa police detective who accessed files on infant deaths handed 2-year demotion

A veteran detective with the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) is being demoted for two years for discreditable conduct after a disciplinary tribunal found her guilty of invading the privacy of families by inappropriately accessing the files of dead children and asking one parent about a mother’s vaccination status.

Const. Helen Grus was suspended in 2022 over allegations that she had engaged in “an unauthorized project” by accessing case files to which she wasn’t assigned.

s President Donald Trump announced, as of August 18, peace talks with Iran had terminated, it will be interesting to see if he pursues a necessary tact markedly different from how Japan surrendered at the end of World War II.

After the U.S. dropped two atomic bombs on Japan, as far as its Emperor Hirohito was concerned, it was the final nail in the coffin of reality. It was he, and not the military, that sought an end to the war. Although his military pleaded with the emperor to fight on to the last man, he understood the high price of doing so. Despite the military’s “never surrender” mindset, its loyalty to the emperor took priority.

Has Britain fallen out of love with itself?

In 2011, with the glass barely swept up after the London riots, the think-tank Demos measured Britain’s pride in itself and found it obstinately intact. A net 74 per cent of us were proud to be British. Last week, Demos ran the ruler over us again. The figure is 47 per cent. Pride in Britain’s role in the world stands at 13 per cent. The BBC, which 15 years ago enjoyed a net pride score of 48 per cent, now sits at minus-11, meaning more Britons are ashamed of the corporation than proud of it. That last number is, I suppose, at least evidence that the public can still see straight.

Sounds exactly like Canada.

They’re baaack. The Iowa chapter of the Satanic Temple is back in the news this week, having allied with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in a lawsuit over requests regarding a “family-friendly” holiday event in the state’s Capitol rotunda. They are accusing the state’s Department of Administrative Services (DAS) Director Mark Campbell and forum Director Adam Steen of violating the Temple’s rights to free speech, religious exercise, and nondiscrimination.

The first poisoner held no medical licence and operated outside of Canadian law. He sold and shipped toxic chemicals with tracking numbers after having advertised on suicide forums. He killed more than 50 people a year. In May 2026, he pleaded guilty to counselling or aiding suicide.

Vienna Calls in Police Reinforcements as Migrant Youth Crime Escalates

Forty-eight police officers from Austria’s federal states are to be deployed to Vienna for up to three months from September, as authorities respond to growing concerns over migrant youth crime and violence in the capital.

The reinforcements will support Vienna’s police, particularly during night-time operations and in areas identified as crime hotspots. Six officers will come from Carinthia, while others will be drawn from Salzburg, Styria, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, and Burgenland.

Canadian Armed Forces brass under fire as Catholic bishops slam prayer ban

OTTAWA — Canada’s Catholic bishops are declaring a holy war against directives to Canada’s military chaplains banning prayer at public events.

In a statement posted this week, Most Rev. Scott McCaig, bishop of the Military Ordinariate of Canada, added his objections to the contentious late-July directive by Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) brass prohibiting faith-based prayers at official military ceremonies, instructing them instead to replace prayers with secular “spiritual reflections.”
