A new round of 50 per cent tariffs on nearly US$20 billion worth of Canadian goods ranging from dairy to down jackets is set to take effect Aug. 19.

Luigi Mangione said Friday he is pleading guilty to both counts of federal stalking charges connected to the 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, a major development that could complicate New York prosecutors’ separate murder case against him.
Mangione, 28, pleaded guilty in Manhattan federal court to two stalking charges resulting in Thompson’s death. Each count carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney’s new sovereign wealth fund risks repeating the problems of a troubled British fund he helped create, a new report warns.
The report, released Thursday by think tank the Montreal Economic Institute (MEI), notes that Carney’s Canada Strong Fund echoes the United Kingdom’s National Wealth Fund, and argues that the resemblance should be a red flag for the Canadian prime minister and former Bank of England governor.

US politicians investigating alleged secret Chinese backing of Code Pink, a far-Left feminist protest group established in the US, are examining its activities in Britain as part of an inquiry into foreign interference.
Code Pink has organised protests in the UK against Britain’s involvement in “the genocide in Gaza”, encouraged its activists to demonstrate outside RAF bases, and issued statements claiming that Britain’s leaders have been “bought by Zionism”.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said both U.S. President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney will now be given “options” following trade talks between Canadian and U.S. trade officials on Thursday.
Greer, who spoke to CBC News exclusively following the talks, called the meetings “good” and “cordial.”
Following the meeting, Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc told reporters he would “continue to do the work Canadians expect us to do.”
UK right-wing populist leader Nigel Farage won Friday’s by-election in Clacton, regaining the parliamentary seat he resigned a month earlier to trigger the vote.

The Ford government is fuelling xenophobia by excluding temporary residents and undocumented migrants from accessing Ontario’s social assistance programs, critics say.
On Thursday, Children, Community and Social Services Minister Michael Parsa announced that the new rules, effective immediately, are meant to protect taxpayer dollars, ensuring Ontario Works and the Ontario Disability Support Program are focused on supporting only families and individuals who are legally authorized to live in Canada.
“They are promoting xenophobia with these speeches that migrants are stealing and leeching off the systems, which we are not,” said Luisa Ortiz-Garza, a migrant community co-ordinator at Parkdale Community Legal Services. “I think this is just an openly racist policy.”

CALGARY — Former Conservative minister Edwina Currie has drawn attention after suggesting that a brothel would be needed near a rural English village where about 1,200 young male asylum seekers are expected to be accommodated.
Currie made the remark during a discussion on Times Radio about asylum accommodation at a former military site near Little Piddington, Buckinghamshire.

The White House said in a report on Thursday that more than 40 countries had helped China sidestep US tariffs by routing exports through nations that face lower American import duties.
The countries named include Canada, India, Mexico, Japan and South Korea, which the White House said had helped China evade tens of billions of dollars in tariffs, which are levied on companies importing goods.
White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said it had cost “American jobs and billions in revenue”.

Flock, the US surveillance firm, is rolling out new safeguards to prevent police misuse of its technology which, its founder and chief executive admits, should have happened sooner.
Police have used Flock to track romantic partners and stalk strangers, leading to growing public backlash against the company. It has also been used to find stolen cars and missing people.
Asked whether it had taken Flock too long to protect tens of thousands of its cameras, licence plate readers and drones from police abuse, Garrett Langley said: “Yeah… yes.”
Volodymyr Zelensky has asked the US to sell him 10 per cent of its Patriot missiles to help Ukraine intercept Russian strikes.
Kyiv is suffering critical shortages of the defensive weapons, which are the only systems in its arsenal capable of intercepting incoming ballistic missiles.
“This year we have two and a half less interceptors than we had in 2025,” the Ukrainian president said in an interview with CNN. “Russia has two times more ballistic missiles per month than they had before.”
