Arrested NATO intern has history of fraud, was ordered to take ethics course

A Canadian NATO intern arrested in Belgium on suspicion of spying for China was ordered by a federal watchdog to take a course in ethics after being found to have committed fraud in applying twice under two slightly different identities for a public service job.

Claire (Biwei) Zhang, a Canadian of Chinese origin, worked in public service roles, including at Statistics Canada, before taking up the NATO internship at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, known as SHAPE, in Mons near the French border.

In the spring of 1997, I was on the phone with Tucker Carlson when he asked me about Stephen Glass. Glass had written an explosive article in The New Republic. Called “Spring Breakdown,” it claimed that young men at the conservative conference CPAC were involved in drugs, drinking, and sexual assault.

Tucker and I had been discussing something totally different when he suddenly asked me about the Glass piece. I told him I had been at CPAC and not seen anything like what Glass described. I was a journalist for a magazine called Insight and certainly would have reported seeing something like that.

According to a poll released two weeks ago by Abacus Data, Mark Carney and the Liberals hold a six-point lead over Pierre Poilievre and the Conservatives, 43 per cent to 37 per cent. Nothing startling there, most pollsters have the Liberals as much as 10 points ahead.

But just beneath the headline numbers, Abacus shows some intriguing facts about the Canadian electorate.

We’ll be a Chinese protectorate by then anyway.
