The risk of the Liberals trying to sell a generational budget to a skeptical generation

The Carney government’s first budget is being sold as “generational.” As the economic plan’s central metaphor, it might be spot on. But for young people, the takeaway may not be what the government hopes for.

The budget document and Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne’s speech make obsessive use of the words generation and generational. It’s a textbook case of branding-by-repetition — a nation-building budget designed as a piece of nation-branding. You can’t go more than a few paragraphs without running into another invocation of generational ambition:

“The level of uncertainty is higher than what we have seen and felt for generations.”

Sudan’s Islamist General: How Al-Burhan’s Alliance with Iran and the Muslim Brotherhood Threatens U.S. and Israeli Security

General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan – Rocks Islamist Despot Look!

Sudan has become the newest front in Iran’s long war against the West and Israel — and Washington cannot afford to keep pretending otherwise. While diplomats speak of ceasefires and “inclusive transitions,” Tehran is laying the groundwork for something far more dangerous: a military beachhead on the Red Sea, operated through its newest ally in Khartoum, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

Jesse Kline: Carney trolls Canada with claim buyers want ‘low carbon’ oil

Prime Minister Mark Carney came to power on a platform of change, promising to prioritize economic growth over the divisive politics of the Trudeau era. Budget 2025 was considered the first real test of his premiership, and while it contains some good measures, it continues to follow the modern Liberal playbook of throwing ungodly sums of money at our problems and attempting to centrally plan the economy.

Are Canadians going to get behind Mark Carney’s ‘generational’ budget?

“Generational” is the Carney government’s adjective of choice at this moment of consequence. The word appeared 11 times in the prepared text of François Philippe-Champagne’s budget speech and another 45 times in the 493-page budget document.

It is a word apparently meant to speak to both the gravity of the country’s situation and the bigness of this government response.

“This is not a time for small plans,” Champagne writes in the budget’s foreword.

‘Generational’ as in Generational decline.

If your goal is to elect a Canadian Mamdani then 11 years of LPC governance and this budget will do the trick.

Migrants given asylum despite being accused of sexual offences, whistleblower claims

Migrants who have been accused of sex offences and other crimes are being granted asylum anyway, a whistleblower has claimed.

A senior caseworker has told The Telegraph that Home Office staff can approve claims from asylum seekers charged with crimes, as long as the offence for which they are being prosecuted does not merit a prison sentence of 12 months or more.

She cited a case where she said she was disciplined after refusing to approve an Afghan man’s application because he had been arrested several times for indecently exposing himself in a children’s play area.

Trump and Mamdani have drawn battle lines — how will they fight?

As Zohran Mamdani becomes the 111th mayor of New York, Republicans and Democrats are preparing for a political clash for the ages. The 34-year-old socialist (about to become one of the most well-known Democrats in the USA) is on a collision course with the US president.

On paper, the two New Yorkers couldn’t be more different. Trump, the 79-year-old former real estate baron, lived it up in Manhattan in the 1990s, calling Fifth Avenue his home. Mamdani is a social media savvy former housing counsellor from Queens, who has promised to “freeze the rent” for people living in the roughly 30 per cent of city units designated as “rent stabilised”.

Heads should roll at BBC: leaked dossier reveals doctoring of Trump video and accusations of bias in Gaza coverage

The BBC is facing calls to sack its director-general and other senior executives following accusations of “serious and systemic” editorial bias.

The Telegraph has published revelations from a leaked dossier written by a whistleblower and sent to BBC board members that details numerous instances of apparent bias at the broadcaster.

The examples include a Panorama documentary that doctored a Donald Trump speech and that BBC Arabic “minimised Israeli suffering” in its coverage of the war with Hamas to “paint Israel as the aggressor”.
