Family sues hospital because institution wouldn’t kill their daughter

The family of a Vancouver woman who was forced to transfer hospitals before she could receive medical assistance in dying (MAID) is suing the province of British Columbia and Providence Health Care, saying the health authority’s policy to ban MAID in its facilities violates patients’ Charter rights.

Gaye O’Neill, the mother of 34-year-old Samantha O’Neill, is the lead plaintiff in the case, along with Dr. Jyothi Jayaraman, a palliative care doctor who quit over Providence’s policy that bars patients from accessing MAID in its facilities.

Surgeon General Calls for Tobacco-Style Social-Media Health Warnings

Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy called for Congress to place warning labels on social-media platforms on Monday, similar to the labels for cigarettes and alcohol, in order to protect kids’ mental health.

“The mental health crisis among young people is an emergency — and social media has emerged as an important contributor,” Murthy wrote in a New York Times op-ed, warning that prolonged screen time negatively alters an adolescent’s brain.

THERE is no doubt that the Spanish influenza pandemic of 1918-1919 was used as a primer for Covid-19. Approaching the centenary of the contagion, the US Centers of Disease Control (CDC – cynically dubbed ‘Crime and Death Corporation’) ensured that it was kept at the forefront of public health policy. This warning from history, with the dreadful death toll of twenty, fifty or a hundred million (varying by source) was emphasised in the disease scares of the new millennium.

At the time, those of religious persuasion attributed the Spanish flu to the wrath of God as the most devastating war raged in Europe. In an unusual manifestation, it was fit young men (thus combatants) who were the most likely to succumb.

The Manitoba Islamic Association (MIA) said a Winnipeg resident who committed suicide by lighting himself on fire at the Waverley Grand Mosque was influenced to do it by the Israel-Hamas War.

When people die through their own choice, MIA Board members said it is easy for many to attribute causes to mental health.

Asked about low polling numbers, Trudeau says Canadians are not in ‘decision mode’ yet

When asked whether his own low approval rating could be hurting his party, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday Canadians aren’t in “decision mode” yet.

The governing Liberals have been trailing the opposition Conservatives in the polls for quite some time. A recent Abacus survey gave the Conservatives a 20-point lead over the Liberals.

Trudeau’s own approval rating hasn’t fared much better. The same Abacus poll found that 59 per cent of those surveyed had a negative opinion of the prime minister, while 33 per cent have a positive view of him.

Canada is not ready to send military instructors to Ukraine, Bill Blair says

OTTAWA — Canada is not ready to send military instructors back onto Ukrainian soil to help that country defend against Russia’s ongoing invasion, Defence Minister Bill Blair said Monday.

It was the clearest indication yet that Ottawa is not willing — at this point — to join France’s push to deploy Western personnel to train Ukrainian soldiers inside the war-torn country.

“The circumstances are not right to deploy, in my view, the Canadian trainers in Ukraine,” Blair said on Parliament Hill. “However, should the conditions change, we are open to that.”

Prudent given we don’t currently have a real army.

On Monday, June 10, Toronto police announced they had charged 32-year-old Lou-i Bou-Chahine with public incitement of hatred, under Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code. He allegedly stomped on an Israeli flag at Sunday’s reportedly 50,000-strong Walk for Israel march.

It should be an interesting case to watch. With respect to alleged expressions of hate, Canadian politics has developed a rich lexicon of wishful thinking masquerading as fact since the October 7 terrorist attacks against Israel, and the ensuing and often antisemitic anti-Israel protests.

Stomping a flag? Sounds condescending frankly.

Green Party Leader Elizabeth May says it’s time for her fellow party leaders to sit down for “an adult conversation” about the foreign interference report released earlier this month that’s been dominating debate in Ottawa for the past two weeks.

“I think that conversation has to happen in a secure location where we all have top secret security clearance and can discuss things with each other without a media lens,” she said.

“I think when we do that, we will be able to continue the work that actually puts in place the kinds of protections we need.”

I’m starting to suspect she’s hiding something.
