WASHINGTON — As U.S. President Donald Trump pursues his global trade war and talk of annexation, a new poll suggests the percentage of Canadians who view the United States as a top threat has tripled since 2019.
The survey by the Pew Research Center also suggests that 55 per cent of Canadians say the U.S. remains this country’s most important ally.
Prime Minister Mark Carney, who campaigned and won the recent federal election by promising to stand up for Canada, has so far acquiesced to United States President Donald Trump’s significant demands. Carney agreed to increase spending on our national defence to five per cent of our GDP, agreed to rescind our digital services tax on American tech giants, and seemed to suggest that Canada may take part in Trump’s Golden Dome, modelled after Israel’s Iron Dome. On the dome issue, Trump is now saying it would cost Canada $61-billion, or we can participate for free if we become America’s 51st state. Hopefully Carney is playing the long game here and will eventually fight back, but so far, at least publicly, he has not.
This is not standing up for Canada’s values.
What could he realistically do? Besides he and his cronies will profit deal or no deal, likely the most if Canada is broken up.
An active shooter armed with tactical gear and a rifle opened fire upon Border Patrol agents as they arrived at a Border Patrol annex facility in McAllen, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley on Monday.
Agents and local police returned fire and killed the gunman. No federal agents were hit, but one McAllen police officer was struck. Law enforcement sources say the officer is in stable condition.

Someone murdered Raymel Atkins in Louisville, Ky., in 2023. More than a year later, his mother and sister don’t know who did it; the police have not made an arrest in the case. The same is true for Tiffanie Floyd, killed in 2021. And Michael David, killed in 2017. And Cory Crowe, killed in 2014.
In fact, the Louisville police do not arrest anyone in roughly half of murder cases. I spoke to family members of a dozen victims.
