Back in those far-off days when colour TV was still brand-new and expensive, my grandfather saw a newspaper advert for a series of special screens which, if you only placed them over the top of your usual TV, the spiel said would immediately and miraculously render the image in full Technicolor for a fraction of the price of a new machine. Sending off for it, he was disappointed to receive a packet full of flimsy rectangles of various-coloured cellophane which you were supposed to stick to the set so that it looked like everything on it was suddenly being viewed through the prism of a single different hue of the rainbow. If he had only thought to pin the brown one up over an early 1950s BBC Jane Austen adaptation, he could have invented Bridgerton seven decades early.

It was a killing that started with a lie. In October 2020, an Islamist terrorist tracked down and decapitated professor Samuel Paty as he left school on the last day before half-term holidays.

In the days preceding his murder, Paty, 47, who taught geography and history, had been the subject of an intense campaign of online harassment sparked when a 13-year-old student claimed he had discriminated against his Muslim pupils during a class on moral and civic education.

The girl told her father Paty had instructed Muslim students to leave the classroom at the Bois-d’Aulne secondary school at Conflans-Sainte-Honorine in the Paris suburbs while he showed students caricatures of the prophet Muhammad from the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo.

How horribly absurd to read about Islamist predation on what should be a peaceful Sunday.

On July 29, three girls went to a Taylor Swift party at a studio in Southport, Merseyside and did not return. It was meant to be a treat for the summer holidays: two hours of yoga and dancing along to some of their favourite music. Instead, they were stabbed to death, during a frenzied knife attack in the rooms where they had been playing. Bebe King, six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, died at the scene. Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, died in hospital the following day. Eight other children were injured in the attack, as well as two teachers.

Southport murders suspect Axel Rudakubana faces new charges, including one under the Terrorism Act—prompting fresh accusations of a government cover-up. Rudakubana already stands accused of murdering three young girls and attempting to murder ten other people (including eight children) at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport this summer.

The authorities’ refusal to classify the tragic events in Southport as a terror attack—because, they claim, no clear motive has been established—could seem bizarre, but for their consistent track record of dishonesty and defensiveness.

Islamist hate preacher Anjem Choudary has lodged an appeal against his life sentence.

Choudary, 57, who police said had a “radicalising impact” on religious fundamentalists, was convicted in July after being found guilty of running a terrorist organisation.

He will spend more than 26 years in jail in total owing to the time he has already spent in custody, meaning he will not be released before the age of 85.
