When I’m describing my early years to my children it often feels like I’m talking about a journey made by time machine. At the age of 12 — a child myself — I was babysitting other people’s children. I should not have been trusted to look after a peanut butter sandwich, but concepts like safety were more fluid in those days.
I worked three part-time jobs to put myself through university. One of them was at the fur-coat storage department at Eaton’s, and just try explaining that to young people. “Fur storage” and “Eaton’s” are concepts equally lost in the mists of time.

Britain’s Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) have announced they are investigating two officers who attended the scene of Henry Nowak’s death. This does not necessarily mean they will face disciplinary proceedings, merely that such proceedings are now possible. This was probably the only course of action open to the IOPC, particularly after last week’s release of a transcript and more video footage of the incident, seemingly with the consent of the Nowak family. They paint both the police and the Digwas in an even more damning light.
Henry Nowak’s killer has launched a bid to have his murder conviction quashed and his sentence reduced.
Vickrum Digwa, 23, was jailed for life last month with a minimum 21-year term after he stabbed Mr Nowak, 18, to death in December with a ceremonial dagger.
Digwa did not know his teenage victim but ‘lied’ to officers at the scene by claiming Mr Nowak shouted racist abuse, punched him and knocked off his turban.
A man has been convicted of second-degree murder for fatally stabbing his wife in Abbotsford, B.C., just days after he arrived in Canada.
Jagpreet Singh was charged in the death of 41-year-old Balwinder Kaur, his wife of more than 20 years, who was found suffering from multiple stab wounds in her basement suite on March 15, 2024.
While Singh did not dispute causing the fatal stab wounds, he argued that he should only be convicted of the lesser charge of manslaughter, telling the court he killed Kaur “in the heat of passion caused by sudden provocation.”

Digwa falsely accused Henry of being racist, claiming he had called him a ‘p*ki’ and acted as the drunken aggressor who ‘escalated the situation’ – as he stood unhandcuffed while medics performed CPR just yards away.
An officer at the scene repeatedly calls the attacker ‘mate’ and, moments after arresting him, reassures him: ‘I’m not saying you’ve done anything.’

RCMP say they’ve arrested an Ottawa man who’s believed to have resided in Canada for 30 years under a false identity, and who is wanted in Rwanda for his alleged role in that country’s 1994 genocide.
The Mounties said the 68-year-old man was arrested Monday after returning to Canada from abroad. Investigators also executed a search warrant at the man’s home to seize documents and electronic devices.
They’ve been working on this since 2021.

Ezzat Fahs, who holds Lebanese citizenship, obtained refugee protection in Canada about 14 years ago, according to a recent Federal Court decision regarding his case.
The murder last December of Henry Nowak, an 18-year-old university student in Southampton, UK, apparently by a Sikh immigrant using a long tribal knife—which in deference to that ethnic group is permitted to be carried by Sikhs in Britain—followed by the near-fatal assault of Stephen Ogilvie in Belfast earlier this month, apparently by a Sudanese man, have both led to extensive rioting in those cities and raised concerns about immigration and racial relations in the United Kingdom to perhaps their highest level.
The Nowak killing was especially gruesome as the assailant’s brother called police to report Nowak for racial hate crimes, while the mother hid the murder weapon. The assailant himself claimed to be acting in self-defense after being assaulted by Nowak following a number of ethnic slurs. Police body cameras and recording devices yielded chilling evidence of the biases and incompetence of police. They handcuffed Nowak, who had been stabbed five times with the eight-inch knife. His protests of having been grievously injured were ignored and as he was dragged to a police vehicle, he died in apparently excruciating pain while being read his rights as a defendant.
