How the lords of poverty are squandering foreign aid

How corrupt UN charity barons keep Africans poor, sick and hungry

I met Dr Tom Catena in Sudan’s Nuba Mountains — the site of an African war and famine few have even heard about — in a hospital overflowing with children. I saw bombs had ripped away their arms, flying shrapnel had taken out a baby’s eye, anti-personnel mines had shredded legs to jagged bone and ribbons of gangrenous flesh, infants suffering kwashiorkor and the other horrors of malnutrition. Inspired by St Francis of Assisi, ‘Doctor Tom’ has worked almost every day, all day, since he arrived as the only surgeon for the Catholic hospital in Nuba nine years ago. I asked him: ‘Why do you stay?’ He replied: ‘There’s no other option. You leave and abandon everyone here or you stay and keep going.’

Meryl Streep joins Michelle Obama in a meeting with Moroccan teenagers as White House announces $100million education initiative for girls in the country

The first lady’s meeting heralded an announcement that the ‘Let Girls Learn’ initiative would be extended in Morocco on Tuesday with more than $100million of foreign aid going towards transforming secondary education in the country.

Obama, who is traveling with daughters Sasha and Malia on her six-day trip to promote education with stops in Liberia, Morocco and Spain, was greeted at the airport on Monday by King Mohammed VI’s wife Princess Lalla Selma.

100,000,000? Now I understand why the Arabs invented appropriated the zero.

Canada Gave 3 Million Dollars To Mauritania, A Slave State In 2014

This article from the UK reminded me that Canada’s foreign aid program is equally bizarre.

UK’s £2.7bn in aid to countries where Christians are persecuted

Taxpayers in the UK donate £2.7 billion a year in aid to countries where Christians are suffering some of the most extreme religious persecution in the world, figures show.

Analysis of official aid statistics shows that four out of five countries listed on a global human rights watch list, charting attacks or official suppression against Christians, receive money from the overseas development budget or through other official agencies.

David Cameron said last year that Christianity is now the “most persecuted religion around the world” and said Britain should be “unashamed” in standing up for religious freedom.

Canada is no better, as I have reported previously we give Millions upon Millions to  Muslim nations that persecute Christians and anyone else they can get their hands on.

75 Million alone to Pakistan last year, 3 Million to Slavery State Mauritania and the beat goes on… without rhyme or reason.

Have a look at this handy graphic detailing our aid expenditures on a country by country basis and see for yourself.

You’ll be appalled.

Foreign aid, and post-colonial guilt gone mad

Post-colonial guilt is alive and well, and via Britain’s absurd foreign aid budget the UK is now about to pay, literally, for alleged crimes that it just didn’t commit. Try saying that out loud in front of a Guardian reader/ Foreign Office official

In addition to misappropriating foreign aid, Africa has hit on another scam — screwing reparations from the UK government for the atrocities committed by the beastly colonials.

William Hague opened the floodgates when he shelled out £20 million of taxpayers money as compensation to the victims of British abuse during the Mau Mau uprising notwithstanding that after the passage of more than sixty years most ‘victims’ are almost certainly dead. (We are not told whether Obama got a pay-off because his grandpappy was beaten up by the Brits — or so he says!).

Now, lawsuits are being filed by the relatives of ‘33 peaceful protesters who were massacred by British troops in Malawi in 1959’.

There is, however, a slight weakness in their case. None of it is true.

The invasion from Africa – the result of 50 years of foreign aid failure

Over the last 50 years, Africa has received over $1 trn in development aid. That’s about $20 bn a year. Yet every year the hordes crossing the Med to escape Africa’s poverty, misery and hopelessness increase. Just in the last week over 10,000 Africans fled to Europe. And this week, there will probably be even more.

And what’s the answer from our rulers? “We need to give more money to Africa to help it develop”.

After WW II, under the Marshall Plan, over 5 years the Americans gave about $100bn (in today’s money) – $20bn a year – to rebuild. So, Africa has received the equivalent of a Marshall Plan every single year for the last 50 years and there are now more Africans in poverty than ever before…

Shocker! British aid money is being used to line the pockets of corrupt foreign politicians, warns former Pakistani cricket star Imran Khan

British aid money is being used to line the pockets of wealthy Pakistanis with links to the country’s corrupt regime, minsters have been warned.

Former cricket star Imran Khan said Pakistani politicians were syphoning off cash from the multi-million pound budget handed over by the Department for International Development.

Mr Khan, head of Pakistan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf opposition party, said the cash was going to those who did not need it and ‘never reaches’ deserving people.

The remaks, to the Sun on Sunday newspaper, come after a report revealed aid spending had done nothing to help the economic and political freedoms of people in the countries which get the cash.

It examined the progress of 28 countries which have had a share of the aid financed by British taxpayers and found that the money ‘does not have any discernible impact on freedom in developing countries’.

The report produced by the TaxPayers’ Alliance found that twice as many countries lost freedoms after receiving British aid than improved the political and human rights conditions for their citizens…

Your lot are responsible for Ebola deaths, Kofi, not us!

I almost threw something at the TV this morning when I saw the smug, holier-than-thou, multi-millionaire, former Secretary-General of the utterly corrupt UN, Kofi Annan, lecturing us about Ebola and claiming the West has ‘not done enough’ to combat the spread of the disease.

So, let me remind Kofi of a few facts:

1. After WWII, under the Marshall Plan the US gave Europe around $20 billion a year (in today’s money) for five years to rebuild shattered European economies. This led to one of the greatest periods of prosperity the world has ever experienced

2. Since 1965 (so that’s almost 50 years), Africa has received over $1 trillion in foreign aid ($20 billion a year) and many African countries (especially Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea where there are the most cases of Ebola) are now poorer than they were in 1965. Where has all the money gone? Mostly stolen by the African countries’ ruling elites.

3. The ruling elites in three of the four countries where there is Ebola steal more money from their countries each year than they receive in foreign aid…

For another example of this silliness, consider this excerpt from an article in the Straight (Vancouver):

Dr. James Johnston is not an expert on the hemorrhagic disease. He’s a tuberculosis specialist. Although the two illnesses are different, he noted that “obviously, you can draw parallels”.

“We’re never really going to get to the problem, to the source, without investing in health-care infrastructure elsewhere,” Johnston said by phone.

Johnston called the Straight on October 14, following up on a previous interview that dealt with the subject of TB, this time observing that everyone seems to be talking about Ebola.

“We’re investing millions and millions of dollars here addressing…potential Ebola in Canada,” Johnston said. “Everyone and their dog [are] meeting about it but…really, you could spend that money in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea.”

The problem is that those countries are black holes for foreign aid. The money just disappears.

Hey! It gave us Ebola!

Foreign aid is a waste of money. I should know, I’ve advised Britain how to spend it

Our politicians like to present the gargantuan international aid budget as a badge of compassion. In reality, it is a monument to their vanity and extravagance with other people’s money.

Rather than helping the poor of the developing world, the colossal funds spent by the British government on overseas assistance sustain a vast, bureaucratic aid industry which actually fuels corruption and hinders economic progress.

The ludicrousness of the system was highlighted this week with the release of a TaxPayers’ Alliance report, which found that British aid ‘does not have any discernible impact on freedom in developing countries’.

Donor conference pledges $5.4 billion for Gaza

Qatar promises $1 billion; Palestinians had requested $4 billion for post-war reconstruction

International envoys pledged about $5.4 billion in aid for the Gaza Strip at a meeting in Egypt on Sunday, Norway’s foreign minister said.

“The participants pledged approximately $5.4 billion (NIS 20 billion),” said Boerge Brende, reading out a closing statement at the Cairo conference, which Norway co-hosted.

Half of the pledges will go for reconstruction and the rest as unspecified aid to the Palestinians, he said.

The donors “committed themselves to start disbursing their assistance as soon as possible,” Brende said.

The conference aimed at financing the reconstruction of swaths of Gaza destroyed in a July-August war between Israel and Hamas.

Gas-rich Qatar led the way at the donors conference in Cairo with a promise of $1 billion in aid to the coastal enclave…
