COVID-19 travel restrictions for China arrivals ‘not effective,’ ‘little bit absurd’: infectious disease experts

Testing requirements implemented on travellers arriving from China due to the country’s surge in COVID-19 cases are “ineffective” and “a little bit absurd,” according to two infectious disease experts.

Following the easing of COVID-19 polices in China, which was quickly followed by a spike in cases, the U.S., Japan, India, South Korea, Taiwan and Italy announced testing requirements for all travellers entering from China in the past week.

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) said it was monitoring the situation on Thursday.

Following a surge of infections, the U.S. announced new COVID-19 testing requirements for all travellers entering from China – but Canada has not said whether it will be imposing a similar policy.

“Travellers continue to be advised to maintain enhanced health precautions and follow public health measures at their ports of entry,” said a spokesperson for the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) in an email to CTVNews.ca Wednesday. “Any other updates will be communicated to travellers through a travel health notice.”

China’s domination of international shipping and control of key European ports would enable it to choke global trade in the event of a conflict with the West over Taiwan, an EU research paper has warned.

The paper, which draws on Chinese government documents, found that “there is a growing politicisation and militarisation of China’s civilian maritime sector” at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions.

“Given the impact of the current war in Ukraine, it is crucial for Europe’s security and prosperity to critically evaluate this vulnerability,” said the paper’s author, Professor Jonathan Holslag of the Brussels VUB university and the Belgian Royal Higher Institute for Defence.

Massive Police-Led Iris Scan Collection in China Raises Concerns of State Control and Repression: Canadian Study

A new study from the University of Toronto reveals a massive police-led iris scan collection campaign conducted in China’s western province of Qinghai, which researchers said could be used for increased state control and repression of ethnic and religious minorities and critics of the communist regime.

The study, published by U of T’s The Citizen Lab on Dec. 14, looked at nearly 190 publicly available sources, including the official social media accounts of the Chinese regime or public security bureau and local news reports. Among these sources, 53 contained figures showing that between March 2019 and July 2022, Chinese police may have collected between roughly 1,250,000 and 1,450,000 iris scans, representing between one-fifth (21.1 percent) and a quarter (25.6 percent) of Qinghai’s total population of 5.9 million.
