Mark Carney’s industry minister, Melanie Joly, is in China trying to attract auto investment while Carney’s government attempts to kill off our existing auto industry. In an interview with the Globe and Mail, Joly explained how she wants Chinese-made electric vehicles to be built in Canada.

Prime Minister Mark Carney may not have a bilateral meeting planned yet with U.S. President Donald Trump, but a hot microphone caught them talking about trade at the G7 leaders’ summit in Évian-les-Bains, France.
Carney can be seen on camera, leaning in to talk to Trump, who was sitting at the leaders’ table ahead of a working luncheon.
A microphone in the room faintly picks them up, apparently talking about Canada’s recent agreement with China to allow a small number of Chinese EVs into the Canadian market at a lower tariff rate.

Industry Minister Mélanie Joly says she will be meeting with four Chinese companies that are considering building electric vehicles in Canada when she visits China this week in an effort to attract investment to this country’s auto sector.
The four companies – BYD, Chery, Geely and Shanghai Launch Automotive Technology – have been examining possible investments in Canada, Ms. Joly said in an interview. Shanghai Launch’s proposal includes a partnership with British automaker Austin Motor Co., she added.
Canada is a very small market, without US access the ChiComs will just smile and wave at Joly but if she offers to subsidize China’s slavers with tax payer dollars they might perk up a bit.
As electric vehicles make their way here on cargo ships from China, export markets like Canada are becoming ever more crucial to Chinese carmakers during a seismic shift in the global auto industry.
Dozens of those companies are grappling with factors at home that have driven them to focus on selling cars to other countries to keep up production levels. Meanwhile, overseas markets are attempting to balance accepting a new era of Chinese EV dominance with protecting any existing auto industries through tariffs and import caps.

China’s Ministry of State Security would like its citizens to be on the lookout for foreign spies, including, apparently, turtles.
The ministry claimed in a Friday WeChat post that foreign intelligence agencies were harvesting maritime data “through a variety of new spying devices” from the waters around China. Sensors attached to marine animals such as sea turtles and large fish were allegedly discovered “collecting sensitive marine environment data such as water temperature, salinity and ocean currents in real time, and transmitting them overseas via satellite.”
The world is applauding the latest Chinese vehicles and sales are surging almost everywhere the cars are available. The one exception: China itself.
New-car sales in China, the world’s largest new-vehicle market, fell 22% in May compared with the same month a year earlier to around 1.5 million vehicles.
