The Last Canadian Politician I’d Trust to Police the Internet

Justin Trudeau’s nine-year tenure as Canadian prime minister, which ended when his own Liberal caucus tossed him overboard in late 2024, can be divided thematically into two distinct periods.

During the mid-to-late 2010s, he presented himself as a sunny Canadian patriot. Then, following the COVID pandemic, the George Floyd protests, and the unmarked-graves social panic of 2021 (which Trudeau’s own government did much to spread), he sounded the exact opposite theme: Canada, he began telling Canadians, was in fact a deeply racist genocide state. He ordered his Liberal colleagues to implement a massive “Action Plan on Combatting Hate,” and introduced legislation that would give his government new powers to stamp out hate speech.

Trouble looming for Carney? Canadian PMs lose 67% of elections during recessions, 60% during technical recessions

Economic recession is one of the most reliable precursors to a change in government. When the economy is growing, Canadian prime ministers win elections 83 percent of the time; when it is in recession, they lose 67 percent of the time.

But economic stagnation is almost as dangerous: since 1980, incumbents have lost three in five (60 percent) elections held in contexts of economic stagnation or technical recession (two consecutive quarters of 0.2 percent growth or negative growth).

The Elbow people have an irrational tolerance for self-inflicted pain so I’m not counting on an awakening.

Canadian ambassador to U.S. downplays July 1 urgency of CUSMA negotiations

Canadian ambassador to the U.S. Mark Wiseman says he wants Canada to be more “top-of-mind” for Americans, while downplaying the urgency around the July 1 deadline for the renewal of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).

“Americans don’t wake up every day thinking about Canada,” Wiseman said during a fireside chat with BMO CEO Darryl White at the Canadian Club in Toronto on Monday.

Wiseman is Carney’s boy, in on the con. Wiseman is a proponent of Open Borders replacement migration arguing for a no vetting policy.

The minister of artificial intelligence, Evan Solomon, took the podium to introduce his boss in glowing terms: a great leader who cared deeply about the “scourge” of antisemitism in Canada. The event was highly anticipated, for some. Canadian Jews have been targeted with increasingly violent and frequent incitement and hatred. Carney has had little, if anything, to say. His decision to address the community was long overdue.

Why Alberta’s new oil pipeline may never be built

In less than two weeks Alberta is expected to deliver to the federal government a solid proposal for a pipeline to the northwest coast of B.C. But so far there is no private sector partner willing to come forward to pay for it.

This is definitely a fly in the ointment of a proposal that Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has been flogging for years. She finally got some encouragement from the federal government in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by Prime Minister Mark Carney and herself in November.

Carney weighted the “Aboriginal” cost making any project likely to fail.

Mark Carney’s industry minister, Melanie Joly, is in China trying to attract auto investment while Carney’s government attempts to kill off our existing auto industry. In an interview with the Globe and Mail, Joly explained how she wants Chinese-made electric vehicles to be built in Canada.

The question should always be “How does this benefit Brookfield?”

Hot mic moment at G7 catches Carney, Trump talking about Chinese EVs

Prime Minister Mark Carney may not have a bilateral meeting planned yet with U.S. President Donald Trump, but a hot microphone caught them talking about trade at the G7 leaders’ summit in Évian-les-Bains, France.

Carney can be seen on camera, leaning in to talk to Trump, who was sitting at the leaders’ table ahead of a working luncheon.

A microphone in the room faintly picks them up, apparently talking about Canada’s recent agreement with China to allow a small number of Chinese EVs into the Canadian market at a lower tariff rate.

The CBC is optimistic all our troubles are solved.

I took that as a sign of warming relations., As recently as February, President Donald Trump insisted that American politicians negotiated an insufficient share of the toll revenue, despite the fact that the project was 100 per cent financed by Canadian taxpayers.

Government abruptly suspends citizenship certificates issued under ‘lost Canadians’ law

The federal government has suddenly suspended a number of Canadian citizenship certificates issued to people around the world who became eligible for citizenship late last year.

In a notice emailed Saturday to an unknown number of people who successfully applied for and obtained citizenship certificates based on having a Canadian ancestor, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada ordered them to return their certificates pending a review of their files.

“The purpose of this letter is to inform you that I have information in my possession that indicates that you may not be entitled to hold a Canadian certificate of citizenship,” reads the notice signed Peggy Sun, registrar of Canadian citizenship.

Canada cracking down on asylum claims from St-Pierre and Miquelon ferry to Nfld.

OTTAWA – The federal government says it is cracking down on what it calls a “low volume” of asylum claims made by foreigners arriving in Newfoundland and Labrador from a nearby territory of France.

Saint Pierre and Miquelon, an archipelago 19 kilometres off the coast of Newfoundland, is served by frequent ferry service.

Federal advocate warns Canada’s housing affordability crisis could take 1,000 years to fix

A federal housing watchdog is warning that Canada is building affordable housing so slowly it could take more than 1,000 years to eliminate homelessness and restore affordability for the country’s poorest residents.

In her annual report to Parliament, Federal Housing Advocate Marie-Josée Houle said Canada faces a shortfall of 4.4 million affordable homes and needs a dramatic increase in public, non-profit and co-operative housing construction to address the crisis.

Canada is living through something closer to The Truman Show than most people realize.

The film presents a man living inside a manufactured world, one carefully staged so that he sees only what others want him to see. His routines are real enough, but the setting is contrived: the horizon is false; the sky is a set; the town is a performance; and even his relationships are filtered through a script written by others. Like the average person, Truman is not stupid. He has simply been enclosed within a controlled reality and given little reason to question the frame.
