Canada races to beat US deadline in Afghanistan

Canada is racing to wind down its Afghanistan evacuation effort ahead of America’s 31 August deadline, as officials warn some may be left behind.

As of 24 August, Canada had airlifted more than 2,700 people out of Kabul, including Canadian citizens, Afghans and other foreign nationals.

But efforts have been stymied by chaos on the ground, Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan acknowledged on Wednesday.

“We are pushing our people and our aircrafts to their limits,” he said.

Canada has vowed to take in 20,000 Afghan refugees, but has not specified a timeline.

Torrent of online ‘toxicity,’ including hate, targeting election candidates: study

OTTAWA, Kan. – A project examining more than 350,000 comments sent to candidates on Twitter during the first week of the federal election campaign found more than a quarter of the tweets were considered toxic.

The executive director of the Samara Centre for Democracy says the research, which looked only at Twitter, found 20 per cent of the tweets were on the low or middle end of what the project called a “toxicity scale,” in that contained insults, sexist language or rude comments.

Sabreena Delhon says a further seven per cent of the tweets were “severely toxic,” including hateful, aggressive comments or threats of violence against candidates or their families.

Conservatives lead in popular support, but Liberals would still eke out a diminished minority win today: poll analysis

OTTAWA — The Conservative party has taken the lead in nationwide federal election campaign polling, and is closing the gap with the Liberals in Ontario, according to an analysis by Vox Pop Labs.

And while the analysis also suggests the Liberals would still win the most seats if the election were held now, it forecasts that they would fall short of the number needed to form a majority government.

Top-line numbers aggregated in The Signal by Vox Pop Labs suggest Erin O’Toole’s Conservatives now have the support of 34.5 per cent of voters, compared to 33.5 per cent for Justin Trudeau’s Liberals.

The New Democrats are sitting at 19.8 per cent support, a level that has remained virtually unchanged over the first 10 days of campaigning.

A weakened minority? As good as a loss certainly. Would that be enough for the LPC to dump Prince Airhead? I doubt it.

SULTANI: Shame on Monsef for calling Taliban ‘our brothers’

In a morning briefing on Afghanistan, Maryam Monsef, Canada’s Minister for Women and Gender Equality called the Taliban her “brothers” and asked them to allow Canadians to get to the Kabul airport in order to leave the country. After facing heavy criticism, Monsef is defending herself on the grounds that she used “brothers” in a cultural context.

As a Canadian who moved to this country as an Afghan refugee, I want to be very clear, there is no cultural context in which calling the Taliban “brothers” is acceptable. Words carry meaning, and meanings imply moral positions.

RCMP conducting ‘character’ checks on staff as former top intelligence official’s trial approaches

It took the arrest of one of its top intelligence officials to make it happen, but the RCMP says it’s now keeping better tabs on the “character” of the people it employs.

Cameron Ortis, who led the force’s National Intelligence Co-ordination Centre (NICC), was arrested in September 2019 in Ottawa. He was accused of revealing secrets to an unnamed recipient and of planning to give additional classified information to an unspecified foreign entity or terrorist group.

He is charged with multiple Security of Information Act violations, breach of trust and a computer-related offence.

Canada turns to satirical Indigenous website to interpret grim news

Days after the statues of two British monarchs were toppled in the province of Manitoba amid growing fury over the legacy of Canada’s residential school system, where Indigenous children were forcibly sent for much of the 20th century, the website Walking Eagle News had its own take – not so much on the grief and outrage, but on the fixation with statues.

“Country was ‘mere seconds’ from reconciliation before the statue toppled: Manitoba premier,” ran the Walking Eagle News headline.

Afghanistan: Taliban committed to post-deadline safe passage, US says .. and they believe them?

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said the Taliban have promised to allow foreigners and Afghans to leave Afghanistan beyond 31 August, when a US-controlled airlift will end.

He said Washington and its allies had “a responsibility to hold [the Taliban] to that commitment”.

Mr Blinken said the US was still on track to complete operations at Kabul airport by the end of the month.

There are still thousands inside and outside the airport wanting to fly out.

So the US airlift will end as scheduled on the 31st perhaps sooner, and the Taliban have promised to allow Afghans, US and other foreign citizens safe passage after that date. I guess Pigs really can fly.

As Afghan Women Face Brutal Subjugation Under Taliban Rule, Biden Admin To Host 5K Run for ‘Women’s Equality’

As millions of Afghan women are abandoned to subjugation and torture at the hands of the Taliban, President Joe Biden’s Defense Department will celebrate “Women’s Equality Day” on Thursday by hosting a 5K run at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois.

“Women’s Equality Day gives us an opportunity to reflect on the many benefits of true equality and the role of women in our public life,” the military’s diversity and inclusion officers wrote in an email announcing the event. No registration is required to participate, and prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers.

Cyberwar – Part One

Cybercrime often merges with cyberwarfare. The techniques of both are similar, even if their intentions are not. Yet, unlike their “real-world” counterparts, we cannot afford to treat the former as merely a law enforcement problem and the latter as a military problem. Today’s gnat is tomorrow’s nuclear-tipped missile.

In a recent article, former U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton highlighted the cyberwarfare being waged on the West every day by Russia, China, Iran and North Korea. The assault is an accelerating proxy war, a coordinated terrorism campaign conducted by both hired criminals and military intelligence agencies, capable of great economic and societal damage. At the same time, even at lower intensity, it is a subtler attack on Western morale.

AOC: Biden Must Resettle At Least 200K Afghans in U.S.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) says President Joe Biden’s administration must resettle at least 200,000 Afghans across the United States as part of its withdrawal from Afghanistan.

In an interview with The Independent, Ocasio-Cortez urged Biden to set a floor of 200,000 visas for Afghans to be evacuated from Afghanistan and brought to the U.S. for permanent resettlement and eventual naturalized American citizenship.
