The deposition of Canada’s prime minister is unlikely to be so sanguinary as the Ceaușescus in Romania. But it will be no less definitive.
As I write, Canadian police, many dressed in military garb and supported by armored vehicles and snipers(!), are moving in to enforce several court orders and demands of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, and others that the “Freedom Convoy” of Canadian truckers stop blocking the Ambassador Bridge, the major artery between the United States and Canada, and disperse. Some of the protestors are leaving while many others are standing their ground.
Will the heavy hand of the state succeed in crushing the protest? In the short term, perhaps.

The US media are shamefully smearing the ‘Freedom Convoy’ as a far-right menace.
By now, most Americans have heard of the truckers’ actions happening north of the border. Based on lurid descriptions of the protests from the US media, they could be forgiven for thinking these protesters are a small bunch of nasty thugs and Nazis who must be put down immediately. Indeed, it seems American reporters and commentators have decided to project all of their hatred of Trumpists and deplorable workers generally on to the Canadian truckers.
Publicly funded journalists continue to tackle the hard questions.
“Heath Racela identifies as three-quarters white and one-quarter Filipino,” begins a National Public Radio report published on the internet this week, detailing the fraught racial politics of choosing emoji skin colors. Your humble correspondent, for those who might be wondering, identifies as one-half white and one-half Irish.
It’s a rather strange construction. Either Mr. (Mx.?) Racela is one-quarter Filipino, or he is not. Race and ethnicity seem odd arenas for the advancement of the self-identification fad. These past few years we have witnessed the mainstreaming of a zealous race essentialism which asserts that such identities are the burdens of our history—inescapable if inconvenient facts handed down to us from the past.

Crowds snatch ‘blasphemer’, 41, from police then brutally kill him and hang body from tree in remote village
A man was stoned to death in a remote village in eastern Pakistan for allegedly desecrating the Koran, police have said.
The custodian of local mosque said he saw Mushtaq Ahmed, 41, burning the Muslim holy book inside the mosque on Saturday evening and informed the police.
The subsequent violence took place in a village in the district of Khanewal in Punjab province.
This is like scoring a touchdown in Islam!

The parody of Trudeau’s authoritarian Canada was created in the “Where’s Waldo” style by artist Bob Moran and features in comic form many of the outrageously, left-wing people and events that are occurring in Canada even as the Freedom Convoy is desperately trying to put a halt to some of it.

“The gradual red pilling of Bill Maher has been something to watch over the last few years,” Stacey Lennox wrote recently, and Matt Margolis noted that “his rants are important, because even he is embarrassed by the radical elements of his party, and he’s not afraid to call them out.” On Friday, Maher also called out Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, reading aloud comments Trudeau made about unvaccinated people and excoriating the feckless Canadian leader’s authoritarianism, even likening him to Adolf Hitler. But unlike the Left’s comparisons of virtually every dissenter from their agenda, especially Donald Trump, to Hitler, Maher actually had a point.

They rushed to bolt the door and lock the windows of the little wooden house. It trembled from the battering of the men outside. Petro Mohalat, now aged 95, remembers the first food raids in the winter of 1932.
He was five years old when the communist “brigade” arrived in the village. His grandmother told the children to hide anywhere they could.
“It was very scary. The brigade had pitchforks and they came to every house searching for bread,” he recalls. “They used crowbars to come inside. Then they went to all the barns trying to find any buried bread.”

Let’s examine Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s statement yet again on Friday that “politicians don’t direct police in a democratic society,” which is nonsense.
If that was true, the police would be a law unto themselves, which is what happens in dictatorships.

Two members of the military’s elite special forces unit are under investigation for their alleged involvement in the convoy protest in Ottawa, according to a statement from the Department of National Defence.
Maj.-Gen Steve Boivin, commander of the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command, said the first case came to the attention of senior leaders on Feb. 1, and the other on Feb. 10.
Both members were already in the process of being released from the Canadian Armed Forces and were supporting the protest “in some form or another,” he said.

The approach to medical information increasingly taken by authorities and the media is damaging to public health and scientific inquiry.
Imperial County, California, a poor, largely Hispanic agricultural region in the southeastern corner of the state, has been hit hard by Covid-19. By the end of January, according to the New York Times’s Covid-19 database, Imperial County had suffered 845 Covid deaths, or 4.7 per thousand inhabitants—a rate almost 80 percent higher than the U.S. average. The case fatality rate in Imperial County is 1.44 percent, the second-highest in California—and was significantly higher, 2.10 percent, at the end of October 2021 before the Omicron wave.

In his lightning trip to Beijing on February 4, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a “Strategic Partnership” treaty with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. The event coincided with the 20th anniversary of another “Strategic Partnership” deal that he had signed in 2002, with then US President George W Bush.
So, did the Beijing signature represent a reversal of course in Russian foreign policy that, since Russia’s admission into the G7 club (later G8), had been focused on forging closer ties with the United States?

Is there room in the Canadian political marketplace for a new centrist party that rejects the tribalism being embraced by the Liberals and Conservatives? I’m increasingly of the mind that there is.
Maybe it’s just the effect of February in Canada but the dismal events of recent weeks have led me to the conclusion that our major parties are beyond renewal.
The nature of politics in the age of the algorithm is that you have to be polarizing to attract attention. Both the progressive left and populist right have stoked tribal emotions and the tribes are feeding off an unhealthy silage of fear and hatred.
The CPC can hardly be described as “right” let alone “far right.”
The OPP says the aim of an officer going to the door of a farm in Peterborough County was merely to try to keep things “safe and lawful.”
Responding to a Saturday column on a woman named Nadine Ellis-Maffei being surprised to see a cop knock on her door with advice on how to act at the Freedom Convoy, the OPP said it was merely doing its policing duties.
