Prince Harry and family’s UK visit ‘pulled from under their feet at 11th hour’

The Duke of Sussex fears his children will not meet King Charles in the coming days after their UK visit was “pulled out from under their feet at the 11th hour”.

Prince Harry and Meghan were planning their first trip to Britain as a family in four years for events related to the Invictus Games, due to be held in Birmingham in July.

The duke was said to have been excited for Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, to be reunited with King Charles during the visit early next month.

However, the family trip now appears uncertain after the government declined his request for police protection outside royal residences.

On Thursday CP’s Craig Lord called attention to a different angle on the whole fuss, which isn’t the notional recession (yet), but the forecasting failure that preceded it. Economists at the Desjardins credit-union consortium are warning that StatCan’s monthly economic estimates are growing wobbly, leading to larger retrospective revisions — i.e., bigger surprises — when quarterly and yearly data are released later.

Ontario overhauls foreign worker program amid fraud concerns

To prepare for his Canadian citizenship test, Stéphane Bazin from France read the federal study guide several times, memorizing facts about hockey players, prime ministers and historical figures.

Bazin learned far less, he said, about Indigenous Peoples and their history.

“The story in the guide is written by the winners,” said Bazin, 41, who wrote the test and became a citizen three years ago. “It’s a very settler-oriented narrative of the French and the British settling — it’s almost like they arrived in an empty country.”

The Carney government’s Canada Day conundrums

Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke at Holy Blossom Temple in Toronto several weeks ago and denounced antisemitism and stated that, “Unity is not uniformity … our differences are strengths to be nurtured, not risks to be managed.” All Canadians of at least the age of seven have heard similar remarks by public figures, but they do not address the requirement of the comprehensive defence of minorities, and in particular the Jewish population. Carney flattered himself and his government for introducing Bill C-9, the Combating Hate Act, which has been described in this column before and has raised more concerns about the curtailment of freedom of expression than comfort for threatened minorities.
