Europe considering proposals to allow navigational fees in strait of Hormuz

Europe is studying proposals that may allow the charging of navigational fees in the strait of Hormuz so long as the tolls are not compulsory and have the support of the UN agency that regulates maritime transport.

Britain’s deputy prime minister, David Lammy, said the imposition of compulsory tolls would be disastrous. But some of his cabinet colleagues said they recognised that systems of payments for specific navigational services were permissible in many natural waterways, including the strait of Malacca and the Channel.

Iran’s Mojtaba Khamenei vows revenge for father’s killing

Mojtaba Khamenei has vowed to exact revenge on the United States and Israel for the killing of his father and predecessor as Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.

Khamenei was killed in an airstrike on February 28, at the start of the US-Israeli war against Iran.

“Revenge is the demand of the nation and must certainly be carried out,” according to a written statement attributed to Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba, which was broadcast on state television.

Algerian caught trying to rape woman was let go by police

An Algerian who tried to rape a woman near Buckingham Palace was released by police despite being caught red-handed, a judge said.

Algerian-born Ramzi Barkat, 54, followed the lone woman out of St James’s Park, central London, in the early hours of Sept 7, 2024, Southwark Crown Court heard.

After his attempts to flirt with her were rejected, he tackled her to the ground, grabbed her wrists and “straddled” her, Judge Justin Cole said.

Health professionals in B.C. made 2,807 errors while managing more than 4,000 euthanasia cases in 2024, according to documents from the provincial health ministry.

The B.C. oversight unit for medical assistance in dying (MAID) identified 2,807 cases that required government “follow-up” from at least 4,169 MAID cases handled that year, according to the documents first obtained by the news outlet Canadian Catholic News through a freedom of information request.

Canadians support Mark Carney’s approach to managing the economy, even though he’s presided over the worst first year of growth for a prime minister since at least 1963.

A Nanos Research Group poll for Bloomberg News shows 60% of Canadians think Carney has done a very good or good job of handling the economy. That compares with 24% who think he’s done a poor or very poor job.

Man arrested after telling Muslim family to “get the f— out of the country” at Halifax Costco

A Halifax man has been arrested and charged following a confrontation at a Bayers Lake Costco Saturday, that police are investigating as a hate-motivated incident.

The arrest comes after a video showing the man allegedly directing “anti-Muslim” remarks toward a Muslim family went viral online.

When a Harvard student needs ChatGPT to help with reading a novel, it’s clear that America’s high schools aren’t teaching students how to read.

A new story from The Atlantic shows the decline in literacy by telling the story of a Harvard student having trouble in class. Assistant Director for Humanities and Social Sciences Support Margaret Rennix said this student came to her and told her about using AI to translate Anthony Burgess’s A Clockwork Orange into easier language. Rennix told The Atlantic that the student was confused by what the student called “Old English” in the 1962 novel.
