Markham Cancelled Drag Queen Mural Upsetting CBC’s Groomer Pals
The City of Markham’s sudden, last-minute cancellation of a piece of public artwork one year in the making has the artist — and his subject — concerned about censorship.
In early September, Vancouver-based artist Julian Yi-Zhong Hou was scheduled to install a piece called “Bicycle” on the exterior of the Pan Am Centre sports complex in downtown Markham for a five-month period.
The printed vinyl banner, which measures 127 feet by 30 feet, features a person in drag and was to be unveiled at an event featuring local drag queens, artists and other performers. Then — one day before the installation and over the objections of Markham’s own public art curator — the city cancelled.
Because what city is complete without it’s own oversized artwork dedicated to sexual weirdness?

Hundreds of protesters with Palestinian flags gathered at University Avenue and Adelaide Street on Saturday. In videos posted to social media, protesters can be heard yelling “Zionist cafe” and chanting “boycott” outside Café Landwer’s University Avenue location.

Tsingtao: Video shows Chinese beer worker urinating into tank
Chinese authorities are investigating after a viral video appeared to show a worker from Tsingtao urinating into a tank, believed to contain ingredients for its popular beer.
The clip has received tens of millions of views on social media.
The company said it alerted police immediately after the video came to its attention, adding that the batch of ingredients had been sealed.
Tsingtao is one of China’s top beer producers and its biggest exporter.

The president of Canadian Union for Public Employees (CUPE) Ontario, Fred Hahn, has apologized for comments he made on Oct. 8, one day after the Hamas attack on Israel that killed over 350 Israelis and injured more than 1,900 people in that country by late that Saturday.
“On October 7th, Hamas committed a horrific terrorist attack on civilians in Israel. On the day immediately following that, I tweeted about resistance. The timing was wrong. That was an error, and I apologize,” wrote Mr. Hahn in an open letter on Oct. 21.
