German councils demand funds for bunkers, civil protection

German local councils on Saturday called for the government to refurbish out of use bunkers.

The comments were made by André Berghegger, the head of the Association of Towns and Municipalities, to the Funke media conglomerate.

They come as Russia’s war in Ukraine enters its third year and a day after Defense Minister Boris Pistorius visited civil protection facilities in Finland.

Miami Beach v spring break: revelers and residents mourn city’s restrictions

There is a different look to spring break in Miami Beach this year, as hordes of students descend from around the country for the annual ritual of sunshine and youthful hedonism.

The palm trees, soft sands and cool blue Atlantic waters that draw tens of thousands to the month-long party are still there. Except now they’re obscured by scores of armed law enforcement officers, many sent at the behest of Florida’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis.

Unprecedented images of South Beach almost as a military zone, combined with $100 car parking, alcohol bans, bar and beach closures and curfews, are hardly the impression that the usually tourism-friendly Miami Beach would wish to project.

Virgin Mary statue that multiplied pizza and cried blood ruled a sham

A self-proclaimed mystic who told hundreds of devotees in Italy that her statue of the Virgin Mary shed tears of blood and could miraculously multiply plates of pizza has been declared a fraud by the Catholic Church.

A commission of Church-appointed experts told Gisella Cardia, 54, to stop gathering her followers every month in Trevignano, in central Italy, where she would go into a trance and write down messages the statue passed on to her.

Good News for Singh’s School Lunch Plan? Dead bodies are going unclaimed in Ontario, and the numbers are climbing

The number of dead people in Ontario whose bodies were not claimed by loved ones or family members has surged in the last few years, according to provincial figures.

A total of 1,183 bodies went unclaimed in 2023 compared to 983 in 2022 and 438 in 2019, the Office of the Chief Coroner says.

Since 2019, there was been a 170 per cent increase in the number of unclaimed bodies.

Germany: Six in Ten Adults Unwilling to Defend Country if Attacked

Less than 40 per cent of Germans said they would be willing to defend their nation with weapons even if it came under attack, a survey has found.

A poll conducted by Forsa for German broadcaster RTL Deutschland, found that 59 per cent of adults said they would “probably not” or “absolutely not” take up arms to defend their homeland in the case of an invasion or other attack.

‘He’s a liar and a hate-monger’: Former prime minister Kim Campbell slams Pierre Poilievre

OTTAWA — Former prime minister Kim Campbell called Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre a “liar and a hate-monger,” and suggested she won’t vote for his party in the next federal election.

Campbell, who was a Progressive Conservative prime minister for just over four months in 1993, made the comments on the “Beyond a Ballot” podcast in an episode released on Thursday to mark International Women’s Day.

“I think there might be some quite good people in the Conservative party. I have problems with their leader,” said Campbell.

The University of Virginia spends $20 million a year on its 235 DEI staffers, including a woman who says the spike in premature deaths in Appalachia is due to the ‘toxicity of whiteness,’ a damning report says.

Open the Books, a spending watchdog, says the flagship public college in Charlottesville drops $15 million on salaries and $5 million more in benefits to its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) team.

They include Rachel Spraker, an ‘equity and inclusive’ officer, who calls Appalachia’s wave of premature deaths a sign of ‘white toxicity,’ and the school’s diversity chief Martin Davidson, who pockets nearly $600,000 a year.

Email reveals that Ottawa told Canada’s top soldier not to call budget changes ‘cuts’

OTTAWA — Canada’s top soldier was told he couldn’t use the word “cut” in a memo to soldiers about the federal government’s budget plans for the military, newly disclosed documents reveal.

The emails late last summer between Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Wayne Eyre’s office and the Department of National Defence (DND), obtained by the Star under the Access to Information Act, highlight the bewildering semantics — and the tension — between Canada’s soldiers and its politicians when it comes to defence spending.

DND is expected to have almost $2.6 billion in its budget “reallocated” over the next three years as a part of the Liberals’ broader exercise to redirect $14.1 billion in spending over the next five years, according to plans tabled last week.
