High-risk offender released from custody for third time
A high-risk offender has once again been released from custody in Guelph.
A judge made that ruling Thursday for 36-year-old Medhani Yohans, a known high-risk offender. His whereabouts are currently unknown.
Yohans has a history of violence, including two sexual assaults on strangers. The Guelph Police Service believes he poses a risk to the community, particularly to women, and worry he may go on to commit similar offences.

Last year, more than 90,000 people made asylum claims in Ontario, and it seems Premier Doug Ford wants that number to go up.
Ford made the comments at the close of the meetings he and other premiers held this week in Huntsville.
“We will be issuing our own work permits. We aren’t going to sit around and wait for the federal government,” Ford said.

The Vancouver International Airport has introduced miniature ponies as part of its Less Airport Stress Initiative.
The airport introduced the program in 2017 to “reduce travel anxiety” and “enhance well-being” among passengers at the airport. It has also featured therapy dogs, according to the Vancouver International Airport (YVR) website.
YVR said it was the first airport in North America to offer such a passenger care program.

OTTAWA — Now that the British government has vowed to lower its voting age to 16 by the next general election, one Canadian senator says it’s past time for Canada to do the same.
The U.K. announced last week that it would lower its voting age from 18 to 16 in a bid to strengthen British democracy and restore trust in politics.
Sen. Marilou McPhedran said the issue has been her “top parliamentary priority” since she joined the Red Chamber. She said lowering the voting age to 16 would be good for democracy and that the only arguments against it are “based on stereotypes.”
Controversial so-called street preachers charged with hate crimes in British Columbia
A pair of so-called street preachers known for verbally harassing women in Ontario are now facing hate crime charges in relation to allegations they interfered with worshippers at two churches in B.C.’s Lower Mainland last fall.
According to court documents obtained by CBC News, Steven Ravbar and Matthew Carapella are accused of mischief “motivated by bias, prejudice or hate based on sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression” for a pair of incidents dating back to a Sunday in November 2024.

President Macron and his wife, Brigitte, have started libel proceedings in the United States against a right-wing influencer who has promoted the conspiracy theory that the French first lady was born a man.
The Macrons filed a suit in a Delaware court on Wednesday against Candace Owens, a 36-year-old American influencer and podcaster. Owens began promoting the claim that Mrs Macron was transgender on her YouTube channel, which has four million subscribers, in January.
Eva Chipiuk, a lawyer known for her involvement in the Freedom Convoy and vocal criticism of Canadian institutions, has been blindsided after the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) terminated its banking relationship with her, citing risk-related concerns.
According to an official letter the banking institution sent to Chipiuk, her “recent activity was outside of RBC’s client risk appetite,” and it would “no longer be in a position to continue serving her.”
