A German court has sentenced a man and a woman to lengthy prison sentences for enslaving and abusing two Yazidi girls under the so-called “Islamic State” group in Iraq.
The Iraqi couple were convicted of war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity. They were also convicted of sexually abusing children and aiding and abetting the listed offenses.
The man was sentenced to life in prison, while his former partner was given a juvenile sentence of nine and a half years.

Loyalists in Northern Ireland plan to burn a replica of a mosque as part of a bonfire on Friday night.
The cardboard model of a Muslim place of worship was seen on top of a loyalist bonfire pyre in Moygashel, County Tyrone, today, as police said a 56-year-old man had been arrested.
Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn described the bonfire display as a ‘sickening and cowardly act of intimidation’, carried out by the same group which received backlash last year after they burnt an effigy of a migrant boat.

Several towns in Germany’s Baden-Württemberg region have tightened security and entry rules at outdoor swimming pools following repeated disturbances involving groups of young immigrants arriving from neighboring France.

It has become far more diverse and multicultural than it once was, and that is, as we have been reminded constantly for decades now, something to celebrate. An Islamist terrorist linked to the 7/7 London bombings is back on the streets after being released from a secure mental health unit despite warnings that he is a major risk to public safety.
Haroon Aswat – who was jailed for 20 years for plotting to form an extremist training camp in 1999 – has been deemed a danger to national security by police.
However, a High Court judge ruled last year that the 50-year-old can be released from a south-east London mental hospital after completing treatment.
