Chinese court rejects Canadian Robert Schellenberg’s appeal of death sentence

A Chinese court upheld on Tuesday the death sentence of Canadian prisoner Robert Schellenberg for drug smuggling — a day before another court is due to rule on the case of another Canadian accused of spying.

The court proceedings for the two Canadians come as lawyers in Canada representing Meng Wanzhou, the detained chief financial officer of telecoms giant Huawei, make a final push to convince a B.C. Supreme Court not to extradite her to the United States, where she faces charges linked to violating sanctions.

Schellenberg was arrested for drug smuggling in 2014 and jailed for 15 years in late 2018.

Well that sucks.

Majority of Canadians support or somewhat support boycott of Communist China Olympics: Nanos survey

TORONTO — The next edition of the Olympic Games are only half a year away, and more than half of Canadians say they support or somewhat support a Canadian boycott of the event, according to a new survey from Nanos Research for CTV News.

The idea of boycotting the Beijing Games has been floated for years. The Conservatives are on the record as calling for a Canadian boycott as part of a “wider plan” among Western allies, while human rights groups have urged the International Olympic Committee to move the event out of China.

Afghanistan war: Taliban capture city of Kunduz

The Taliban have captured the key northern Afghan city of Kunduz, one of the country’s largest, after fierce fighting with government forces.

A local official told the BBC all but the city’s airport had fallen to the militants. The group’s flag was seen raised in the city centre.

Chaotic scenes have been reported with buildings and shops ablaze.

Four regional capitals have now fallen to the Taliban since Friday. Kunduz is their most important gain this year.

UK tells its nationals to leave Afghanistan immediately

The British government has told all UK nationals to leave Afghanistan immediately as fighting intensifies between Taliban militants and Afghan security forces.

The announcement came just hours after the Taliban ambushed and killed the director of Afghanistan’s government media center in Kabul on Friday.

Britain’s Foreign Office warned that “terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks” amid a drawdown of international troops stationed there.

Seems only a matter of time before the Taliban rules. So much for “Nation Building”.  Good luck to the Chinese and the Russians!

Lawsuit filed against US State Dept for allegedly concealing info on ‘abusive’ anal-swab testing of American diplomats in China

“I think you’re liking this too much Mr. President”

A nonprofit organization in the US has sued the State Department, claiming the Biden administration is unlawfully withholding records of American diplomats who allegedly have been subjected to anal swab Covid tests by Beijing.

Judicial Watch, a conservative non-partisan educational foundation, filed the lawsuit on Friday. Under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), the organization had previously requested the State Department to provide “non-identifying records of US diplomatic personnel being subjected to invasive COVID-19 ‘anal swab’ tests by the Chinese government.” However, no response has been provided within a legitimate time period.

Did the New York Times stifle lab leak debate because of its commercial relationships with China?

The world’s verdict on the lab leak seems to be shifting. The Biden Administration now thinks there is a credible possibility that Covid-19 leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology. WHO chief Tedros Adhanome Ghebreyesus has admitted that attempts to dismiss the hypothesis were “premature”. These are, of course, positive developments — but they should also leave us astounded.

Academics of Chinese origin warn new national security screening for research funding could lead to ‘racial profiling’

Two organizations representing academics of Chinese origin in Canada are warning that new mandatory national security assessments for federal funding of university research could lead to “racial profiling Chinese researchers as foreign agents.”

The Canadian Academy of Chinese Professors and the Canadian Association of Chinese Professors recently released a statement, addressed to administrators at this country’s universities, saying they strongly oppose the new risk assessment process laid out in national security guidelines for research partnerships unveiled by Ottawa last month.

The most shocking thing about the news that the UK government is looking to remove China from Britain’s nuclear power program is that it has taken so long. But it will not be a straight-forward process. The HMS Queen Elizabeth and her carrier group arrived in the disputed waters on Thursday and are set to sail through Beijing’s backyard alongside eight other vessels in a show of strength to Chinese President Xi Jingping.

But Chinese state media has warned any move seen as a challenge to islands which Beijing lays claim to would mean Britain ‘is being a bi*ch’ and ‘asking for a beating’.

China Ambushes Top American Diplomat

Once again, China’s regime went out of its way to insult Biden administration diplomats.

The mauling this time took place in the Chinese city of Tianjin, on July 26. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, the most senior Biden administration official to visit China, was the victim.

Beijing used the meeting with Ms. Sherman, as it used the now-infamous March meeting in Anchorage, not to work with the U.S. but to launch a propaganda campaign against Washington.

A professor at one of Canada’s major universities has written a column for a state-run newspaper in China in which she defends Beijing’s record on ethnic minorities such as the Uyghurs and argues Canadians are being thoughtless and self-righteous in accusing the Chinese government of genocide in Xinjiang.

Yuezhi Zhao holds the Canada Research Chair in Political Economy of Global Communication at Simon Fraser University. Her column, titled Canada Should Reflect On Its Struggle With Racism and dated July 29, ran in China Daily. The Beijing-based English-language media outlet describes itself as a government agency on LinkedIn, and it is a central fixture of the Chinese government’s efforts to disseminate its views abroad.

… In a similar vein, Prof. Zhao accuses Canada of genocide, saying “the genocide of the aboriginal population has been at the very core of the founding of Canada.” She argues Canadians are mistakenly assuming that Beijing is trying to assimilate the Uyghurs.

China Offers the Taliban a Warm Welcome While Urging Peace Talks

China offered a high-profile public stage to the Taliban on Wednesday, declaring that the group rapidly retaking large parts of Afghanistan would play “an important role in the process of peaceful reconciliation and reconstruction” of the country.

Chinese officials began two days of talks with a delegation of Taliban leaders in Tianjin, a coastal city in northeastern China, significantly raising the group’s international stature after steady military gains that have taken advantage of the withdrawal of American and NATO combat forces from Afghanistan.

China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi, called the Taliban “a pivotal military and political force,” but urged their leaders “to hold high the banner of peace talks,” according to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
