BROOKLYN, New York — “Theft, lies, cover-up.”
That was how Justice Department lawyer Taylor Stout opened the United States government’s criminal case against Huawei Technologies, alleging that the Chinese telecommunications giant spent two decades stealing American technology, deceiving global banks and concealing its business with Iran’s repressive regime.
The government’s first witness took the jury into the prosecution’s claim that Huawei assisted Iran’s domestic-surveillance machinery.
OTTAWA — A former senior Canadian defence official suing the federal government over a dismissal her lawyer links to Mark Carney’s pivot toward China is pointing to the government’s newly disclosed military engagement with Beijing — and to what she calls growing public recognition that Canada’s partnership with China has impeded trade talks with Washington.
They’re not in the least ashamed about it.
As the Carney government pursues deeper relations with Beijing, the Chinese government reports it held a “candid” exchange on military issues with Canadian officials earlier this month.
The meeting — which Beijing said took place in Canada on Sept. 4 — followed years of diplomatic strain and is raising concerns among Conservatives, who reject the idea of military co-operation with China.
China’s defence ministry revealed the two countries held their fifth defence co-ordination dialogue last week. Canada’s Defence Department confirmed that report days later.

China’s defence ministry says Canada and China revived their formal Defence Coordination Dialogue on September 4.

The Canadian intern charged with espionage at NATO headquarters in Belgium was found in April near the office of the alliance’s supreme commander after a fire alarm was pulled by a suspected accomplice, a Belgian source familiar with the case told The Globe and Mail.
The intern’s unexpected appearance there triggered an investigation into her activities by the counterintelligence service of NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, known as SHAPE.
Before trial she’ll be released and perhaps allowed to return to Canada.
Either way she will manage to flee to China.

OTTAWA — While the case of Biwei Zhang moves through the courts in Brussels, where an appeals court has extended the detention of the Canadian intern from China accused of espionage inside the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s military high command, a second file involving a Chinese national living and studying in Ontario — whose phone, United States officials found, held photographs of himself and others in tactical formations holding rifle-styled firearms, after he was caught photographing American aircraft in Chicago and admitted to a similar operation at Toronto’s airport — is opening in federal court in Michigan.

BRUSSELS – A Belgian appeals court on Monday rejected the release appeal of Biwei Zhang, the Canadian intern accused of involvement in a criminal organization and of espionage inside the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s military command. The Chamber of Indictments in Brussels extended her pre-trial detention by a month.
The ruling comes days after a European investigative consortium published the most detailed reporting yet on how the closely guarded case began, and on what Canada’s part in it was.
SAN DIEGO — A sworn FBI affidavit unsealed Wednesday describes a seven-year investigation into a Chinese hacking operation that targeted NASA, the Federal Reserve, the Department of Energy, the Justice Department, the National Institutes of Health and, this year, the United States Senate.
The filing says payments from China’s Ministry of State Security to Nanjing Xinjiuwei Network Technology Co. indicate that the private company conducted malicious cyber operations for Beijing. Some of its hackers were former members of the People’s Liberation Army who used their military connections to obtain contracts and subcontracts for offensive cyber operations.
