OTTAWA — Dennis Lu, the Natural Resources Canada scientist at the center of one of the most consequential foreign-interference prosecutions in the country’s history, co-authored a scholarly book on carbon-capture technology that his publisher released in December 2024 — months after Canada’s national security police had already detained him. The Bureau has confirmed Lu’s co-author was a Chinese professor who is also a Communist Party personnel official: the man who, since 2020, has helped run the recruiting machinery at Southeast University in Nanjing and today directs its Talent Work Office.

Mexico not looking to cut side deal with U.S. and leave Canada out, foreign secretary says

Mexico’s foreign secretary says his country isn’t looking to cut a deal with the U.S. if it means abandoning the trilateral trade pact with Canada.

When asked Friday if Mexico would go it alone on a trade deal with the U.S., Roberto Velasco Álvarez shook his head and said all three countries that make up the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) have bilateral issues to work on.

Canada-US Bridge Pact Omits Canada’s Debt Costs, Document Shows

Canada and the US agreed to split the profit from a new bridge between Ontario and Michigan for 15 years — with no provision to cover Canada’s debt-service costs on the project, according to a copy of the pact seen by Bloomberg News.

The agreement in principle covering the Gordie Howe International Bridge appears to contradict earlier public remarks from Prime Minister Mark Carney. And it shows what Canada conceded to get the President Donald Trump’s administration to stop blocking the 1.5-mile bridge over the Detroit River.

Canada joining international program to build next generation of fighter jets

Defence Minister David McGuinty is expected to announce next week in the United Kingdom that Canada will play a role in an international program to build the next generation of stealth fighter jets, CBC News has learned.

Canada has reached a deal to join the Global Combat Air Program as an “observer,” Canadian government sources said.

The U.K., Japan and Italy are all partners in the multibillion-dollar program to develop and build the sixth-generation fighter jet by 2035.

Canada to buy nearly $2-billion in armoured vehicles from U.S. defence contractor

The federal government has picked the local subsidiary of a U.S. defence contractor as Ottawa’s first “strategic partner” to build capabilities for the country’s growing military, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Thursday.

As part of this, Canada will pay General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada nearly $2-billion over four years to build 190 more armoured combat support vehicles, expanding the Canadian Army’s fleet of armoured vehicles to 550 from 360, Mr. Carney said at the company’s plant in London, Ont.

Canadians Like Depraved Slave Labour Camp Called China More Than US Says Pew Research Survey

Canadians’ opinions of the United States have deteriorated while their perceptions of China have improved compared to a few years ago, a new report suggests.

According to a Pew Research Center report released Wednesday, 44 per cent of Canadians surveyed between February and May hold a favourable view of China, while 33 per cent feel the same about the U.S. Last year, Canadians were “equally” favourable toward both countries. But in 2023, most Canadians had a “positive view” of the U.S. at 57 per cent, compared to 14 per cent that viewed China positively.
