Saab’s surveillance jet deal with Canada faces a U.S. stealth tech hurdle

Canada’s planned purchase of the Saab GlobalEye surveillance jet faces significant political and technical hurdles if the aircraft is going to be fully integrated into NORAD.

Much of the success or failure of the effort will depend on convincing the Trump administration and the Pentagon to share a key piece of technology that allows fighter jets and early warning systems to communicate while maintaining stealth.

Experts doubt the United States will allow a high-tech data link used exclusively on F-35 fighters to be installed on either the early warning aircraft or the Gripen-E — if Canada chooses to buy that warplane.

Gatineau muslim told she can’t wear hijab at after-school event: parent committee

A Gatineau school board committee says it’s worried parents will be discouraged from volunteering after a local mother was reportedly told by her child’s elementary school that, due to one of the province’s secularism laws, she would have to remove her hijab if she wants to take part in an after-school event this fall.

“We already have a lot of trouble recruiting in general, so it’s a shame,” said Simon Lajoie, president of the parent committee of the board in question, the Centre de services scolaire des Portages-de-l’Outaouais (CSSPO).

Markham: Muslim youth face Islamophobic backlash for exercising their religious right to burn school Pride Flags

York police say two suspects are facing charges in a potentially hate-motivated incident that saw a Markham school’s Pride flag burned.

Officers responded to the school located near Yonge Street and Clark Avenue in Markham on Tuesday for reports that the flag had been burned. The school was not named by police.

Two 18-year-old suspects, identified as Sepehr Abadar and Mahan Mohammad Radmard, both of Markham, have each been charged with mischief under $5,000.

19-year-old Nicholas Bennett to be charged after Toronto police officer shot in investigation tied to U.S. consulate shooting

The police watchdog is investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting and officer’s death.

“No words can capture the impact on Marc’s family, who expected him to come home today,” Demkiw said. “We are doing everything we can to support them at this difficult time.”

A procession was held from Sunnybrook to the chief coroner’s office at 1 p.m., according to a news release by Toronto police.

Toronto police officer’s murder related to US Consulate shooting investigation

…. Demkiw said the investigation that officers were executing a search warrant for when Pinizzotto was “tragically killed” was related to “a number of shootings,” including the one at the U.S. consulate in March.

There were “several” search warrants executed in the city on Thursday morning.

Demkiw said a suspect, 19-year-old Zara Jabbi, is still “outstanding.” Demkiw would not say if Jabbi is related to Pinizzotto’s fatal shooting.

Demkiw said Jabbi is considered to be armed and dangerous.

Police didn’t provide any other details.

Another suspect is in custody in hospital, Demkiw added, receiving emergency care.
