Canada’s failed policies are doing more than fouling American air. Summer across the Midwest and East Coast has again brought unhealthy and hazardous air-quality warnings from Canadian wildfires. Poor forest management threatens public health and daily life. Canada’s immigration policies pose a deeper and more lasting danger.
Most Americans still regard Canada as a polite northern extension of the United States: familiar, friendly, and strategically harmless. That view belongs to another era. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said that “nostalgia is not a strategy.” Neither is complacency.
The summer 2026 news cycle continues to be dominated by the Iran War and its vicissitudes and consequences. The disruptions to oil and natural gas supplies and the economic fallout are animating articles with headlines such as Bloomberg’s last month, “Iran Shock Jolts Asia and Europe to Speed Up Energy Transition.”
The energy transition is the idea that the United States and the world are already starting to see the wholesale replacement of oil, natural gas, and coal by three politically favored energy technologies: solar and wind, moderated by batteries.
The U.S. said Monday it will be imposing an additional 50 per cent tariff on Canadian imports due to retaliatory and “discriminatory” measures Canada took in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs.
The new tariff will take effect 30 days after Trump signs the executive order and will apply to goods covered by the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement on free trade, a senior administration official told reporters on background.

Over the past week, the Iranian regime has demonstrated once again that its ambitions extend far beyond destroying Israel. Tehran has launched an unprecedented campaign of missile and drone attacks against several Arab states, targeting critical infrastructure, ships, airports, oil facilities, power stations, desalination plants, ports and even residential neighborhoods.

Premier Doug Ford says U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to introduce new tariffs on Canada over northern Ontario wildfire smoke that’s drifted south of the border is a “bunch of rubbish.”
“Rather than sit there and complain, why don’t we see some help from President Trump. He said the fires are poisoning U.S. air, and that maybe Canada should pay damages, or the U.S. should impose tariffs.

An armed maniac lit an “incendiary device” outside a federal building in lower Manhattan early Monday in an anti-ICE attack being investigated by the terrorism task force, according to officials and sources.
The unidentified man started a fire outside of 26 Federal Plaza around 8:30 a.m., ignited fireworks and threatened passersby with airsoft rifles around 8:30 a.m., police and sources said.
