A man who raped a 12-year-old girl was acquitted by a court that deemed their relations formed “part of the cultural reality of the gipsy community”.

Under Spanish law, minors under the age of 16 cannot consent to sex. But the court ruled that the man, who was 20 years old at the time, should benefit from a legal exception.

The ruling in Ciudad Real in central Spain, holds that the relationship was “always consensual within the framework of a romantic relationship”, adding that the two were “close in age and maturity”.

The University of Toronto’s attempt to clear a pro-Palestinian encampment on campus will be heard by the Superior Court of Justice on June 19 and 20.

The university had asked the courts for a hearing prior to planned graduation ceremonies that are schedule to run between June 3 and 21, but Justice Markus Koehnen said the mid-June dates were the earliest the hearing could be to allow the respondents to answer their application.

Donald Trump is considering giving Elon Musk a plum advisory role if he wins the US presidential election, according to reports.

The presumptive Republican nominee is understood to have discussed how to give the billionaire Tesla chief executive influence over key policy issues including border security and the economy.

Mr Musk, 52, is also said to be working with Nelson Peltz, the billionaire investor, to convince elite business leaders to reject Joe Biden, according to the Wall Street Journal.

A number of homeless people have been sent out of Edinburgh to make way for tourists ahead of Taylor Swift performing in the city, BBC News has learned.

Shelter Scotland said several homeless people it supports had been sent via taxi to Aberdeen and Glasgow amid a shortage in accommodation, and one person was offered temporary accommodation as far away as Newcastle.
