On the 42nd anniversary of Ottawa trying to deport a man who police named as Toronto’s top Mafia boss, the government has again failed to prove he should be deported back to Italy.

The Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) rejected arguments that Vincenzo DeMaria, better known as Jimmy DeMaria, has been a member of the shadowy and powerful ’Ndrangheta, which is the proper name of the Mafia formed in Italy’s southern region of Calabria, and that he engaged in Mafia activities, including money laundering.

We lack a word in the English language for the emotion that floods the body of a parent who is the custodian of a screaming child on an airplane. It is some combination of humiliation, helplessness and a palpable sense of being judged. Your brain considers all sorts of scenarios in that moment: Can I order a rye for the baby? How long will it take me to die if I jump out the window? Maybe I’m already dying? Surely death would be less painful.

The Ford government is fuelling xenophobia by excluding temporary residents and undocumented migrants from accessing Ontario’s social assistance programs, critics say.

On Thursday, Children, Community and Social Services Minister Michael Parsa announced that the new rules, effective immediately, are meant to protect taxpayer dollars, ensuring Ontario Works and the Ontario Disability Support Program are focused on supporting only families and individuals who are legally authorized to live in Canada.

“They are promoting xenophobia with these speeches that migrants are stealing and leeching off the systems, which we are not,” said Luisa Ortiz-Garza, a migrant community co-ordinator at Parkdale Community Legal Services. “I think this is just an openly racist policy.”

A new UNICEF survey shows that not only isn’t there a famine in Gaza, but the Hamas settlers of the terrorist enclave are some of the best fed in the Middle East.

The UNICEF-led survey rated ‘acute malnutrition’ among children under 5 years old in the Gaza Strip as being at 0.5%. As UN Watch noted, this compares to World Bank data showing a rate of 0.4% in the UK, 0.5% in Germany, 1.6% in Finland and 3.3% in Egypt.

Canadians spent more on taxes than basic necessities in 2025: Study

The average Canadian family last year spent more on paying taxes than for the basic necessities of shelter, food and clothing combined, according to a new study by the Fraser Institute.

A family with an average income of $112,111, the report by the fiscally conservative think tank says, spent $50,721 or 41.9% of its income on taxes in 2025 compared to $43,657, or 36%, for shelter ($27,686), food ($13,249) and clothing ($2,722).
