Pierre Poilievre may be known for his social media savvy, but his campaign is getting some help from a conservative meme machine.
Jeff Ballingall’s company, Mobilize Media, has been retained by the Poilievre Conservative leadership campaign, sources familiar with the hiring told CBC News.
... Ballingall specializes in shareable, anti-Liberal messaging that often takes on a mocking or outraged tone. His Canada Proud and Ontario Proud accounts have amassed hundreds of thousands of followers on Facebook and tens of thousands more on Twitter and Instagram.

TORONTO — Census data released Wednesday offers an unprecedented snapshot of Canada’s transgender population, showing 0.33 per cent of residents identify as a gender that differs from the sex they were assigned at birth.
The data collected during last year’s national household survey shows about 100,815 people are transgender or non-binary, including 31,555 who are transgender women, 27,905 who are transgender men and 41,355 who are non-binary.

A mysterious liver disease that has infected children in a dozen countries around the world has reached Asia, with a case reported in Japan.
The case in Japan of acute hepatitis – or inflammation of the liver – of unknown origin was flagged by local authorities on 21 April in a child who had tested negative for adenovirus – a possible cause being investigated worldwide – and Covid-19.
The patient had not had a liver transplant, the health ministry said on Monday, without giving further details.
A BBC journalist on a work trip to the U.S. was mocked for sharing a shot of a BB gun for sale in Walmart after apparently mistaking it for a real firearm.

… The limousine crash, which occurred on Oct. 6, 2018, killed 20 people, including 17 passengers, the driver and two bystanders, according to New York State Police. Ryerson University is changing its name to Toronto Metropolitan University following years of outcry from staff, students, the public and Indigenous communities.
The school announced the name change Tuesday afternoon following a vote by its board of governors who approved the name. It was recommended by Mohamed Lachemi, the president of the school.

Canadian university advertises for tenure track research chair in its Faculty of Environment – but only women or people who identify as transgender, non-binary or two-spirit are allowed to apply
The University of Waterloo has an opening for a tenure track assistant professor specializing in science and engineering – but white men need not apply.
According to a listing from the Canadian university last month, the position is available only to women, or ‘qualified individuals who self-identify as women, transgender, non-binary, or two-spirit’ – a gender-variant derived from Native American culture.
Men, meanwhile, will not be considered, the school says – especially if they are white.

Ottawa needs more codebreakers — but spy agency says finding them isn’t easy

To Canadian national security officials, Samy Nefkha-Bahri is a supporter of “armed jihad abroad,” who had “dubious associations” and wanted to take part in “combat in Syria.”
Classified government reports obtained by Global News allege he led a group that was preparing to travel “for the purpose of participating in the activities of a terrorist group.”
But instead of arresting and charging the Montreal resident, federal officials grounded him: they denied him a passport “to prevent the commission of a terrorism offence.”
