BRAMPTON, Ont. — Violent extortion attempts, allegedly carried out by transnational organized crime syndicates, have tormented South Asian families and business owners across Canada over the last several years with alarming frequency.
Now, one Brampton, Ont., city councillor has revealed that many in his community believe copycat criminals are behind multiple violent extortion attempts in recent weeks.

New court documents detail an explosive link between “horrendous” allegations of corruption inside the Toronto Police Service and the alleged cross-border drug empire of ex-Olympic snowboarder Ryan Wedding.
The documents detail not only how investigators believed that suspected Wedding drug-runner Gurpeet Singh potentially directed the attempted murder plot against a Toronto jail official, but also how he was allegedly assisted by a supervisor at the jail with whom police said he had had a prior romantic relationship.

A man has been convicted of second-degree murder for fatally stabbing his wife in Abbotsford, B.C., just days after he arrived in Canada.
Jagpreet Singh was charged in the death of 41-year-old Balwinder Kaur, his wife of more than 20 years, who was found suffering from multiple stab wounds in her basement suite on March 15, 2024.
While Singh did not dispute causing the fatal stab wounds, he argued that he should only be convicted of the lesser charge of manslaughter, telling the court he killed Kaur “in the heat of passion caused by sudden provocation.”

Toronto police are searching for a man who allegedly stabbed a victim in the back in an unprovoked attack over the weekend.
It happened on Sunday afternoon, at around 12:45 p.m., in the area of Danforth Avenue and Main Street.
A shooting in the northern German city of Stade left several people dead on Monday, according to local police.
Police initially reported a death toll of five adults, but later on Monday said it has risen to six. Five people died at the scene, while the sixth died in the hospital due to injuries sustained during the shooting, police said in a statement.
… The suspect is a 45-year-old German with Turkish roots, authorities said.

B.C. police have issued an arrest warrant for Naila Sheikh, a former correctional officer in the province who documents appear to indicate was the case manager for a convicted gang murderer at the time of his brazen escape from the Port Coquitlam prison in July 2022.
Sheikh, who formerly worked as a correctional officer at the North Fraser Pretrial Centre, has been charged with breach of trust, personation with intent to gain advantage, and unauthorized use of a computer.
Documents obtained by CBC News appear to indicate that Sheikh was directly assigned as a case manager for Rabih Alkhalil, whose escape from the facility on July 21, 2022, is still under investigation.
