The police force investigating a newspaper columnist for allegedly inciting racial hatred has recorded 1,500 non-crime hate incidents in the past two years.
Essex police logged 702 non-crime hate incidents (NCHIs) between June 2023 and June 2024 and 834 in the 12 months before that, freedom of information responses revealed.
Now even newspaper columnists are being investigated for their tweets.
As she was getting ready for a Remembrance Sunday memorial last weekend, Telegraph journalist Allison Pearson heard a knock at her door. Two policemen had turned up, she claims in an article published last night, to accuse her of a ‘non-crime hate incident’ – a tool used by police to record accusations of ‘hateful’ speech, even when no law has been broken. When she asked what tweet this was regarding, and who had made the complaint against her, she was rebuffed by the officers, according to her account.

A jailed anti-immigration rioter who shouted racist abuse and called asylum seekers ‘child killers’ during protests outside a hotel has died in prison.
Peter Lynch, 61, a father of four, died on Saturday night at HMP Moorland near Doncaster, in south Yorkshire, the prison service confirmed.
He was serving a two year and eight months prison term after being jailed in August. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) is now carrying out an independent investigation into his death.

OTTAWA – Today is expected to mark the end of the criminal trial for two prominent organizers of the “Freedom Convoy” protest, more than one year after the proceedings began.
Tamara Lich and Chris Barber are co-accused of mischief, intimidation and counselling others to break the law, among other charges.
The trial has been legally complicated and burdened with a huge body of evidence that stems from the three-week long demonstration in 2022 that blocked streets and frustrated Ottawa residents.
It appears that freedom of speech is under attack all across the western world. One only has to look at Britain or Ireland to see draconian crackdowns by governments against speech they don’t like. As is typical in these times, it is “woke” leftist governments that are mainly engaging in this behaviour.
