Eight Conservatives from Eastern Canada are appealing to former Quebec Premier Jean Charest’s “sense of duty” in running for the Conservative Party of Canada leadership, with hopes of unifying Canadians and restoring Canada’s economy and reputation worldwide.

Conservative Party politics in Canada have been generally more tranquil than Republican Party politics in the U.S. Though Conservatives have remained out of office since late 2015, the party won the popular vote in successive elections at the national level. Center-right parties, from Quebec’s Coalition Avenir Québec to Alberta’s United Conservative Party, presently govern eight of ten provincial governments across the country.
After publicly supporting the anti-vaccine mandate activists protesting in Ottawa in recent weeks, interim Conservative leader Candice Bergen said Thursday it’s time for the convoy and other protesters blocking two major border crossings to end their demonstrations and go home.
Bergen, who has called the convoy a “passionate, patriotic and peaceful” group of Canadians concerned about freedom at a time of COVID restrictions, said the protesters have made their point to parliamentarians and the Conservative Party will take up their fight in the House of Commons instead.

Conservatives need to move quickly to replace Erin O’Toole, party president says
Federal Conservatives say they have to move quickly to find a permanent replacement for Erin O’Toole, because the minority government means Prime Minister Justin Trudeau could trigger an early election.
Conservative Party president Robert Batherson said Thursday that an organizing committee, which has not yet been appointed, will make a decision on when to hold an election for a new party leader. The same committee, he said, will determine other rules for the leadership race.
But he noted there are time pressures facing the Official Opposition party. “We know from Justin Trudeau calling an election in a pandemic last year that he can call an election at any time,” Mr. Batherson said.

Candice Bergen was voted interim leader of the Conservatives on Wednesday evening after a majority of party MPs voted to remove Erin O’Toole as leader earlier in the day.
Bergen has been the MP for the Manitoba riding of Portage—Lisgar since 2008. She most recently served as the Conservatives’ deputy leader and has been among the party’s most prominent voices in the House of Commons.
As interim leader, Bergen will not be allowed to run for permanent leader when that race is conducted. A date has not yet been determined.
The trucker convoy, the remnants of which seem determined to make those living in the Ottawa core indefinitely miserable, would have been a challenge for any Conservative leader to reckon with. But for Erin O’Toole, it crystallized everything that has plagued his leadership, expressing opposing positions within days of each other, appearing embarrassed to be a conservative, being outshined by his own caucus, and leaving everyone unsatisfied in the end. If it was indeed the trigger for the party revolt that ousted him Wednesday, it is a fitting one.
Honestly I thought O’Toole would survive this challenge and I am no fan.
I do wonder what motivated such a large defeat beyond his obvious shortcomings as a Flip-Flopper etc.
Were the MP’s party to intelligence indicating widespread defections from the CPC?
The current party platform is little different from the LPC causing my withdrawal of support.
Maybe a new leader will change my mind and I’ll return but I suspect not.
Erin O’Toole voted out as leader by Conservative MPs
The party’s members of Parliament met virtually today to cast secret ballots after about one-third of them signed a notice that triggered a leadership review.
Ontario MP and national caucus chair Scott Reid said in a statement that 73 Conservative MPs voted to replace him while 45 endorsed him.
There are 119 Conservative MPs, including O’Toole. As caucus chair, Reid said he did not vote.
Conservative MPs will vote today on whether to keep Erin O’Toole as their leader or plunge the party into another leadership race only 18 months after they finished the last one.
MPs opposed to O’Toole’s leadership have collected enough signatures to prompt today’s secret ballot on his future. That vote is expected to take place sometime before noon ET.
A vote by 50 per cent plus one of the 119 sitting Conservative MPs calling on O’Toole to step down would force him to make way for an interim leader immediately.
Sources tell CBC News that O’Toole’s caucus opponents believe they have the necessary votes, with at least 60 MPs agreeing that he has to go.
