Early on in the COVID-19 ‘pandemic’ that terrified, traumatized and financially devastated so many Canadians, one priority weighed heavily on the federal Liberal government.
That was to protect itself from criticism or embarrassment… and also from legal liability surrounding the $8 billion that taxpayers paid for COVID-19 vaccines to seven pharmaceutical companies — including Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca.
Like most of us, I suppose, the shock to our system and way of life during the government’s response to COVID-19 cannot easily be forgotten. It was our taste of ill-considered government tyranny, a public-health disaster. As more information about its origins and how the disease was handled is revealed, it always gets my attention. In sum, banking on helping defeat Trump, the public-health establishment and media suppressed more credible options for dealing with a disease which was not life-threatening to most in order to promote a vaccine then in the works. The vaccine when it was developed and administered was not terribly effective and has itself caused substantial injury. In the process of locking the country down, the health establishment and government caused the very deleterious effects which the signatories of the Great Barrington Declaration had warned against. Those opposing less tyrannical treatment of COVID-19 included Dr. Anthony Fauci, whose role in creating COVID-19 is no longer deniable.
Canada’s top public health officials, including Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam, were among dozens of federal managers required to sign secrecy pledges during the pandemic that barred them from disclosing information that could cause embarrassment to the Liberal cabinet, newly released documents reveal.
Access To Information records show that at least 29 managers across multiple departments — including Public Health, Foreign Affairs, Health, Industry, and National Defence — signed the confidential agreements.

This past week, The Atlantic ran an excellent, helpful, and important piece by David Zweig, excerpted from his forthcoming book An Abundance of Caution, which is, at least superficially, about the coronavirus pandemic and the school closures it prompted. Zweig denies that it is about the pandemic specifically, saying that it is, rather, about “the failure of the expert class.” Whatever the case, Zweig is unsparing in his criticism …
The White House revamped its COVID-19 information website on Friday, unveiling a sleek new landing page dedicated to the “true origins” of the pandemic.
COVID.gov, which previously contained information about testing, treatment and vaccination against the coronavirus, now redirects to a website that reads, “Lab Leak: True Origins of COVID-19.”
The webpage slams both the Biden administration and former Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s handling of the pandemic — and indicates that the Trump administration is fully onboard with the theory that COVID-19 leaked out of a laboratory in Wuhan, China.
Millions of long-Covid patients continue to struggle with cognitive difficulties
Five years after the pandemic’s start, millions of Americans are still struggling with long-lasting symptoms of Covid-19. Cognitive difficulties are among the most troubling and common symptoms in people both old and young.
These ailments can be severe enough to leave former professionals like Ken Todd unable to work and even diagnosed with a form of mild cognitive impairment.
I first spoke with Todd, a 56-year-old former Showtime executive in New York City, in 2022 for a column on long-Covid patients grappling with crippling fatigue.

Ontario’s top court has ruled that provincial restrictions on gatherings that prohibited peaceful protests for several weeks during the COVID-19 pandemic were unconstitutional.
The Court of Appeal for Ontario made the finding today in a case brought by former Ontario legislator Randy Hillier, who faced several charges for organizing or hosting protests against pandemic measures while the rules were in effect in the spring of 2021.
Hillier appealed after the judge who heard his application found that while the limits on gatherings did infringe on his right to peaceful assembly, they were justified and therefore constitutional.
Even when conservatives are right, they’re right in the wrong way, liberals appear to be saying.
When I first came across Jonathan Chait’s new Atlantic piece, “Why the Covid Reckoning Is So One-Sided,” I assumed the answer would be that Democrats had been the ones relentlessly and tragically wrong about virtually everything during the pandemic. No such luck.
In Mr. Chait’s telling, the left remains uncannily open-minded, always striving for truth, while the dogmatic Right remains hopelessly bogged down in “pathological incuriosity.” Even when conservatives are right, they’re right in the wrong way.

Five years ago today, based on a highly misleading ‘model’ forecast from one academic, Neil Ferguson, the British government ditched its pandemic plan and locked the entire country down. This decision had disastrous and – as Sweden proves – unnecessary consequences.
It was the first of many dreadful mistakes made by the government during the Covid pandemic: shutting schools at the behest of unions, assuming the virus was not airborne, vaccinating children, overclaiming for vaccines and masks. The government thought it knew best and it let us down.
If they’re supposed to be members of a band of truculent conspiracy theorists intent on disrupting the machine of the state, Prof Gwythian Prins and John Constable don’t exactly seem like it.
“In some sense we’re all classic establishment figures… but slightly to one side of it,” Constable says, an observation at which Prins nods vigorously. Turning up at a pub just off Trafalgar Square (where Whitehall meets Clubland and visitors to the country mingle with the people who run it) the two men are immaculately turned out and mildly uneasy.

Was the Covid-19 virus a chance case of animal-to-human transmission, or a deliberately engineered virus escaping from a gain of function laboratory? In the latest sign of a deep shift in America’s underlying political tectonics, the New York Times has published an op-ed complaining that “We were badly misled” about the origin of Covid-19. The lab-leak theory was always plausible, we’re now permitted to say; but groups of supposedly neutral and independent scientists colluded to produce independent-sounding denials, so as to make it seem like a fringe position. Now, apparently, we need “an honest conversation” so that nothing similar happens again.
Five years after the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, there is no shortage of analysis personifying the virus as the villain. In a sense, it’s understandable: SARS-CoV-2 was the catalyst and the killer that drove much of the pandemic destruction. But painting public health leaders as innocent bystanders and Covid as the boogeyman who made people sick and locked down the economy, destroyed businesses, shuttered schools, censored speech, masked children, and suspended constitutional rights and sacred rituals is deceitful historical revisionism.
