Ontario reports 3,700+ new COVID-19 cases; P.1 variant cases have doubled in a week
Ontario reported 3,732 new COVID-19 cases and 23 additional deaths on Sunday, as the province’s active caseload continued its slow, trickling decline and the burden on hospital ICUs stayed flat.
The vast majority of new cases detected are screening positive as the B.1.1.7 variant first discovered in the United Kingdom last year, but the number of cases found to be the P.1 variant from Brazil has more than doubled in the past week.
On April 26, 351 examples of the P.1 variant had been detected in the province. By Sunday, that number had grown to 875.

As India battles through one of the world’s deadliest surges of the Covid-19 pandemic, this week India’s health minister Harsh Vardhan insisted that its fatality rate from the disease remained “the lowest in the world”.
It was a statement that jarred with the devastating images and accounts that have flowed out of India in the past fortnight, of hospitals and morgues filled to capacity, people dying on pavements from scarcity of oxygen, and crematoriums and graveyards visibly overflowing with bodies.

The long-term-care home warned of an escalating COVID-19 outbreak at the 254-bed facility in the eastern Toronto suburb of Scarborough.
“Residents who have Covid-19 will be moved to the 4th floor on December 11, 2020,” read the email, signed by Francis Martis, executive director and Esther Spencer, director of care.

OTTAWA — Canadians will “shortly” receive federal guidance around what they can, and can’t do safely after their first and second COVID-19 shots, according to Health Minister Patty Hajdu.
Facing questions about why Canada has yet to offer any formal guidance to people who have been vaccinated about what degree of risk they have in certain circumstances in the way the United States has, Hajdu said it’s in the works.

Ontario is reporting 3,369 cases of #COVID19 and over 46,800 tests completed. Locally, there are 1,050 new cases in Toronto, 819 in Peel, 286 in York Region, 158 in Ottawa and 157 in Durham.

Why warnings of a deadly 3rd wave in Canada may have gone unheeded
It was a Friday in February and Canada’s COVID-19 situation seemed to be improving. The second wave had crested. Just over 3,000 cases were reported countrywide that day, Feb. 19, down from a peak of 8,766 six weeks earlier.
Dr. Theresa Tam, however, came to a virtual news conference with a warning. New variants of the novel coronavirus threatened the country’s progress.
“We’ve been saying all along that if we ease measures too soon, the epidemic will resurge even stronger. But with highly contagious variants in our midst, the threat of uncontrolled epidemic growth is significantly elevated,” Canada’s chief public health officer said.
Tam has zero credibility. She parroted the Communist Chinese Party line and spread falsehoods from spread to masks etc etc etc.
