When Chinese entities began to buy up farmland near remote but strategic American military installations here in the United States, there were some of us who raised the question, Why?

Those who did so were criticized, described as paranoid, Sinophobic, and hostile to Chinese investment in America.

We might want to revisit that criticism.

A pair of Chinese researchers have been charged for allegedly smuggling a biological pathogen into the US to study at the University of Michigan, according to federal authorities.

Yunqing Jian, 33, and Zunyong Liu, 34, have been charged with conspiracy, smuggling, making false statements and visa fraud after authorities found that Liu entered the country last year with a toxic fungus stashed in his backpack.

Liu attempted to smuggle the pathogen through Detroit airport so he could study it at the University of Michigan laboratory where his girlfriend, Jian, worked, the complaint said.

Even Canada has acknowledged the presence of secret Chinese police stations masquerading as outreach centers.

There is something unsettling about modern silence. The hum of a solar panel. The blink of a router. The quiet whirr of an inverter behind a barn. These things do not shout. They wait. And increasingly, they listen.

This month, two reports — one from Reuters, the other from The Times (U.S.) — confirmed what security analysts long feared and policymakers chose to ignore: the Chinese Communist Party has embedded itself into Western infrastructure. 

I’m filled with admiration for Ukraine’s daring and imaginative strike this weekend at high-value targets across the length and breadth of Russia. For decades, the party has sent thousands of mid-career and senior bureaucrats to pursue executive training and postgraduate studies on U.S. campuses, with Harvard University a coveted destination described by some in China as the top “party school” outside the country.

Alumni of such programs include a former vice president and Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s top negotiator in trade talks with the first Trump administration.

It’s certainly endorsed by Carney.
