The federal plan to cut total fertilizer emissions to 30 per cent below 2020 levels by the end of the decade is really just a funding package for research and technology subsidies aimed at making agriculture more efficient on fertilizer — for now, at least. Behind the apparently-toothless target is a series of funding commitments: $631 million for carbon sequestration on properties including farmland, $98 million for an agricultural “climate solution” fund and $167 million for efficient technology research and subsidies. In 2022, another $550 million was added to the various initiatives.

One in four Canadians confessed to taking on debt in 2022 to pay for higher costs of living, a new survey has found. It’s a trend that has some experts sounding the alarm.

The current purchase of a historic Ottawa church slated to become an “embassy” for a group affiliated with the Freedom Convoy has fallen through, according to documents obtained by CTV News.

St. Brigid’s Church was conditionally sold to a group called The United People of Canada on June 15 but as of Aug. 12, real estate listing documents show the property was listed as “back on the market.”

Dean French, who negotiated with leaders of the Freedom Convoy earlier this year, said the Liberal government didn’t give enough time for a peaceful resolution to transpire before invoking the Emergencies Act to have the protesters removed by force, even though an agreement for the convoy to leave was reached.

“This was a black mark on Canadian history. History will show this was a total overreaction … and the inquiry is going to show that as well,” French told CBC’s Vassy Kapelo in an interview on Aug. 17.
