In Canada fears of ‘dangerous’ politics mounting

Online threats, racist or misogynistic insults, public harassment and outright physical intimidation are just some of the behaviours that officials warn are changing the face of Canadian politics.

The issue was highlighted last weekend, when a man was filmed launching an expletive-laden verbal assault at Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland.

The incident – which was posted to social media – shows a man shouting at her as she approached a lift in Grande Prairie’s city hall during a visit to Alberta.

The only “danger” Canadians face is from the Liberal party.

Canadian politics has a rage problem — and politicians have to be part of the solution

On a June day nearly 40 years ago, Brian Mulroney happened upon a 63-year-old woman named Solange Denis. Mulroney’s government was proposing to make a change to Old Age Security. Denis was mad about that and — with reporters watching — she conveyed her displeasure directly to the prime minister.

Mulroney’s run-in with Denis became a national story. The government was compelled to back down and “Goodbye Charlie Brown” subsequently became shorthand for how a single interaction with a voter can waylay a politician and a government.

What happened to Chrystia Freeland in Grande Prairie, Alberta last week was something else entirely — and many political leaders, from across the partisan spectrum, seemed to recognize that immediately. Among those who condemned the incident were Alberta Premier Jason Kenney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford, two politicians who have had their differences with the federal Liberal government.

The nerve of the CBC publishing this tripe. The anger at the Trudeau Liberals is justified.

Shamima Begum: Spy for Canada smuggled schoolgirl to Syria

Shamima Begum, who fled the UK and joined the Islamic State group, was smuggled into Syria by an intelligence agent for Canada.

Files seen by the BBC show he claimed to have shared Ms Begum’s passport details with Canada, and smuggled other Britons to fight for IS.

Ms Begum’s lawyers are challenging the removal of her citizenship, arguing she was a trafficking victim.

Canada and the UK declined to comment on security issues.

Convoy organizers Tamara Lich and Chris Barber to go on trial in September 2023

OTTAWA – Two of the main “Freedom Convoy” organizers, Tamara Lich and Chris Barber, are expected to go on trial in September 2023 for charges related to the massive protest that gridlocked downtown Ottawa earlier this year.

Thousands of demonstrators filled the streets of Ottawa at the end of January and stayed for three weeks to protest COVID-19 restrictions and the Liberal government.

LPC Thuggery: RCMP “investigating” harassment of Chrystia Freeland in Alberta

The RCMP says it is investigating the verbal harassment of Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland that occurred in Alberta on Aug. 26, saying it “takes threats against public officials seriously.”

“The RCMP, or local police of jurisdiction, review all incidents to determine the appropriate course of action,” said RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Caroline Duval in a statement to CTV News. “Physical action and statements made in person or online can have a significant impact and can be against the law.”

Public safety minister considering security options for politicians after Freeland harassment

OTTAWA – Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino says the federal government is looking at its options when it comes to increasing security for politicians, adding the harassment many face represents a threat to democracy. He says that as the security situation becomes “more and more complex,” there’s a need to “bring the temperature down.”

This comes following a video posted online this weekend of Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland being harassed in Alberta. The video shows a man yelling profanities at the minister in the lobby of Grande Prairie, Alta.’s city hall, before she and her staff enter the elevator.
