By standing up to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Quebeckers have exposed a striking truth: modern race politics in Canada is mostly elitist performance art.

This week, in an effort to quell the uproar caused by his appointment of Amira Elghawaby as the government’s special representative on combating Islamophobia, the Prime Minister declared that “Quebecers are not racists.” He went on to explain, “Quebecers are among the people who are the strongest defenders of individual rights and freedoms, along with a lot of other Canadians.”

The Liberals backed themselves into a corner on firearms — leaving no option but surrender

Conservatives were beaming on Friday after the Liberal government quietly and suddenly abandoned its hotly debated attempts to expand firearms restrictions through Bill C-21.

“My Conservative team and I have forced Justin Trudeau into a temporary but humiliating climb-down today,” Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre crowed.

It was a “climb-down” and it was “humiliating” — that much seems beyond dispute. But if Conservative criticism was a deal-breaker for this government, the Liberals would have a hard time getting much of anything passed.

There is a certain essay by Cicero called “The Second Philippic” which was written to expose the power of the state against freedom of speech and freedom of thought—and the power of one man, Marc Antony. It is a brilliant proclamation and shows Cicero at his best and bravest. It was delivered in the Roman Senate, and Cicero paid for writing it with his life. His hands were cut off and taken to Marc Antony, as proof that Cicero would never write again.

Cicero lived in a dangerous time.

André Pratte: Did no one vet anti-Islamophobia rep’s past?

We were told by the Prime Minister’s Office that Amira Elghawaby was appointed as Canada’s first Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia “following an open, transparent, and merit-based selection process.” It is beyond my comprehension how such a process would not have involved a simple web search to see whether Elghawaby had said or written something that could be embarrassing for the government or her, or both. For instance, writings that would have revealed a simplistic view of Islamophobia in Québec?

FATAH: Trudeau’s choice of Hijabi to combat Islamophobia is puzzling

… Just this Tuesday, an Islamic suicide bomber blew himself up inside a mosque in Peshawar, Pakistan killing over 100 and injuring scores more.

Did Elghawaby have anything to say on these atrocities being committed in the name of Islam? She expressed her discomfort at the protests against the Iranian Islamic regime when she tweeted: “People who are angry with the government in Iran are taking it out on Canadian citizens that are Muslims here.”

Are you taking it out? Clearly, the sight of thousands of exiled Iranians who now call Canada their home upset Elghawaby. What else could we have expected from Trudeau’s new czarina who, instead of criticizing the Ayatollahs of Iran, chose to target fellow Muslims who seek democracy, liberty, freedom of conscience and speech?

She is an Islamist Liar.

Trudeau backs down – Gun Grab bill loses amendment critics say hit hunting rifles

The government has withdrawn a controversial amendment to its proposed firearm legislation — one that critics warned could have restricted access to hunting rifles.

The Liberal amendment to gun law reform Bill C-21, which was tabled in a committee meeting in November, faced questions about how far it would have expanded the scope of weapons that are prohibited in Canada.

Internal polling must have sucked bad.

Justin Trudeau should fire point-person on Islamophobia — and get rid of her job, too, BQ leader says

OTTAWA—Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet has rejected an apology from Ottawa’s point-person on tackling Islamophobia, slamming Amira Elghawaby and demanding her ouster for what he deemed her “ignorance … of the desire for secularism in Quebec.”

Blanchet told reporters on Thursday that he had wanted to speak to Elghawaby before deciding whether her comments warranted her departure from the role of special representative on combating Islamophobia.

New Brunswick Sen. David Adams Richards says he is concerned that the federal government’s proposed internet regulation bill, which is currently being debated in the Senate, will bring about a culture of censorship of Canadians.

“This law will be one of scapegoating all those who do not fit into what our bureaucrats think Canada should be,” Richards said in the Senate on Jan. 31 during the third reading of Bill C-11, also known as the Online Streaming Act.

“Stalin again will be looking over our shoulder when we write.”

Amira Elghawaby apologized in English before a meeting today with Bloc Quebecois Leader Yves-Francois Blanchet.

She says she is “extremely sorry” for the way her words have carried and how they hurt the people of Quebec, and that she will listen carefully and that’s what dialogue is all about.

She’s a liar and she ain’t “Canada’s” anything. Just a cheap bit of vote whoring by Trudeau.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has created a new position—parliamentary secretary for civil liberties—for a similar purpose.

Free speech advocates, too, have said speech rights and free expression are being infringed upon in Canada, particularly since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Freedom Convoy protest last winter, and in light of upcoming government legislation that aims to regulate the internet.

Still no answers on yearslong bread price-fixing scandal: law professor

It’s been more than five years since Canada’s Competition Bureau began its investigation into an alleged bread price-fixing scheme involving major grocery chains and bakeries countrywide.

But since then, no charges have been laid and the Bureau hasn’t released conclusions of its probe.

The vice-dean of research in Civil Law at the University of Ottawa says it raises questions about the watchdog’s ability to safeguard consumers or compel companies.
