With the campaign officially started, Canadians are about to experience something more akin to what we see south of the border: a two-party election.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not taking anything away from the NDP, the Green Party, the Bloc, or their supporters.

They work hard, have their own base and promote their vision and ideals. But in a time of existential crisis for Canada as a whole, they’re an afterthought.

Donald Trump’s very real threat to Canada’s economy and sovereignty hovered over Sunday’s election launch. Who has the experience and expertise to deal with that threat? That’s the only question on Canadians’ minds right now, it’s what’s called the “ballot question.”

Canada’s new border problem — migrants trying to get out of the US

The family of migrants hiking across the US-Canada border under the cover of darkness through thick snow had apparently underestimated the harsh and unwelcoming forestland that links the two countries.

The parents had lost their shoes along the route, the toddlers were not dressed for winter.

Undetected by border patrol and with hypothermia starting to set in, the mother reluctantly made the call for help shortly after 3am.

The B.C. Supreme Court ruling issued this week says the woman claimed she was manipulated and overwhelmed by a “barrage” of overtures from the man and his family that began in October 2022.

I had a conversation last week with a Canadian journalist about the culture war on American campuses. After we finished talking about that, she had one final question for me.

“What the hell is Trump thinking about Canada?”

She wasn’t just asking about President Trump’s tariff threats. She was also asking about Trump’s obsession with referring to Canada as the 51st state. The tariffs were somewhat understandable, even if terribly misguided. They are, after all, one of Trump’s few consistent policy obsessions. He likes tariffs perhaps even more than he likes walls.

‘No Canadian dream’: Meet some who want to join a 51st U.S. state

EDMONTON – Jordon Kosikowie has been thinking a lot about what would happen if Alberta joined the United States.

The 35-year-old works in the oil and gas industry in the Edmonton area and says life has been hard in recent years. So he’s open to the idea if it brings more prosperity.

“If there’s an opportunity for me to put more money into my pocket, why not converse about it?” said Kosikowie, who runs a Facebook group for Albertans who want to be a part of a 51st U.S. state. The group has grown to 1,000 members since it was created a few months ago.

Canada is witnessing a dramatic drop in newcomers choosing to become citizens.

There has been a 40 per cent decline in the past 25 years in the proportion of recent immigrants choosing to move on to citizenship, according to Statistics Canada’s Feng Hou and Garnett Picot.

Only 46 per cent of recent immigrants to Canada are applying for citizenship, say the researchers. That compares with 74 per cent in 1996. Most of the drop took place between 2016 and 2021.

Doug Ford says his ‘absolutely swamped’ MPPs won’t have time to campaign for Pierre Poilievre

Premier Doug Ford is reminding Progressive Conservative cabinet ministers and MPPs they will be too “swamped” with their day jobs to help Pierre Poilievre in the federal election campaign.

Asked at the first ministers’ meeting in Ottawa on Friday if he would “let your MPPs campaign with Mr. Poilievre,” Ford did not mince words.

“I want to make sure our MPPs are fulfilling our mandate. We are going to be absolutely swamped,” said the premier, whose Tories were re-elected Feb. 27.
