Canadian researchers are being asked politically charged questions when trying to secure U.S. grants

Academic researchers are used to filing out forms when applying for grants, but Canadian scholars have expressed shock over a new questionnaire they are receiving when applying for funding issued in part or wholly by the U.S. government.

“Can you confirm that this is no DEI project or DEI elements of the project?” asks one question, with an accompanying link to U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order to nix funding from government programs dealing with diversity, equity and inclusion.

“Can you confirm this is not a climate or “environmental justice” project or include such elements?” asks another.

Trump is owed thanks for this.

Canadian media have been trying for nearly 2 weeks to spin this as some sort of assault on academic integrity etc.

It’s not it’s just an effort to restore integrity and common sense to the toxic academy.

Airline travel between Canada and the US is “collapsing” amid Donald Trump’s tariff war, with flight bookings between the two countries down by over 70%, newly released data suggests.

According to data from the aviation analytics company OAG, airline capacity between Canada and the US has been reduced through October 2025, with the biggest cuts occurring between the months of July and August, which is considered peak travel season. Passenger bookings on Canada to US routes are currently down by over 70% compared to the same period last year.

Comparing the available bookings from March 2024 to March 2025, OAG looked at how many people have booked trans-border flights in the six-month period between April through September. It found that the number of tickets booked was down anywhere from 71% to 76%.

“People close to (Donald) Trump have respect for Pierre Poilievre,” said lawyer Neil Drabkin, who is listed on the Conservative party website as the candidate in the Montreal riding. “Elon Musk, in particular, who has become the bestie with Mr. Trump … has said very favourable things about Mr. Poilievre. And perhaps we don’t need to go further than that kind of relationship for Mr. Musk to whisper in the ear of Mr. Trump.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — Americans are less likely to see Canada and the U.S. as close allies than they were two years ago, the latest indication that President Donald Trump’s tariff threats and talk of taking over a neighboring ally are souring a critical economic and military relationship.

The U.S. shift in viewpoint comes primarily from Democrats, though Republicans are less likely to see Canada as America’s ally now too, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. While about 7 in 10 Democrats saw Canada and the U.S. as close allies before Trump returned to office, now that number is down to about half. For Republicans, the number dropped from 55% to 44%.

In a shift in tone, Trump is referring to Carney as Canada’s prime minister instead of the governor of an American state.

Canada’s prime minister has said the era of deep ties with the US “is over”, as governments from Tokyo to Berlin to Paris sharply criticised Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs on car imports, with some threatening retaliatory action.

Mark Carney warned Canadians that Trump had permanently altered relations and that, regardless of any future trade deals, there would be “no turning back”.

He told reporters: “The old relationship we had with the United States based on deepening integration of our economies and tight security and military cooperation is over.”

Sounds like Carney is pulling us out of Norad and even NATO! We can forget about Aukus too. China loves this guy!

FBI Director Kash Patel warned the U.S. needs to be ‘more vigilant’ about what is coming in across the Canadian border as adversaries have ‘adapted.’

The top law enforcement officer made the claim while testifying before lawmakers in the House Intelligence Committee about global threats on Wednesday.

‘Known and suspected terrorists are flowing in through our northern border more than they are our southern border,’ Patel warned.

He attributed it to the ‘successes we’ve had at closing our southern border.’

A Yale professor who studies fascism is leaving the US to work at a Canadian university because of the current US political climate, which he worries is putting the US at risk of becoming a “fascist dictatorship”.

Jason Stanley, who wrote the 2018 book How Fascism Works: The Politics of Us and Them, has accepted a position at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy.

Stanley told the Daily Nous, a philosophy profession website, that he made the decision “to raise my kids in a country that is not tilting towards a fascist dictatorship”.

Economic strength can translate into geopolitical advantage.

President Donald Trump is approaching world politics with geoeconomic means for a geopolitical purpose. His reinvigoration of the Monroe Doctrine in the Western Hemisphere, military pivot to the Indo-Pacific, and rapprochement with Russia in Europe is the geographic part. His tariffs, encouragement of foreign investment in the United States, promotion of domestic energy production unhampered by climate regulations, and domestic cuts in government programs is the economic part. Back in 1990, the strategic thinker Edward Luttwak wrote that the world was moving from geopolitics to geoeconomics. But, as Luttwak certainly knew, economics has always been an important component of geopolitics. Trump the businessman understands that.

China understands it, too. Its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is geoeconomics on steroids, extending China’s economic influence throughout Europe, Africa, and the Western Hemisphere. The BRI uses economic power to advance China’s geopolitical interests. Trump is merely doing the same thing with his America First policies.

Ontario expects the U.S. administration to significantly ease the impact of auto tariffs on Canada, following a phone call from Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to Premier Doug Ford on Wednesday, according to a source.

Mr. Lutnick called Mr. Ford on Wednesday evening, according to a senior Ontario government source, after U.S. President Donald Trump announced auto tariffs during a news conference. The Globe and Mail is not identifying the source as they are not authorized to speak publicly about internal discussions.

Sounds a bit like Good Cop Bad Cop.

I suspect that many of the same companies that manufacture here now will be forced to relocate to the States or shut down.

The Canadian market it is said is not large enough to sustain a domestic auto industry.
