Donald Trump has threatened to strip California of “large-scale” federal funding after a transgender long jumper took first place in a state competition.

The US president accused Gavin Newsom, the California governor, of breaking the law and defying an executive order he issued early in his term barring biological men from participating in women’s sports.

He said he would personally intervene to stop the athlete, who won both the long jump and triple jumps at California’s Southern Section contest for under-19s on May 17, from competing in the state finals this weekend.

When I was a kid, there were boys at lunch and recess who were natural bullies but were too scared to bully the other boys, knowing they’d get a beat down. So instead, they bullied the girls. And they took out all their shame and cowardice on these girls by getting too physically rough with them, be it in sports, tag, or in whatever other physical activity the girls were engaged in.

Katharine Birbalsingh, head of the Michaela Community School in Wembley, northwest London, said her school was unlikely to have any trans pupils because of its mainly ethnic-minority intake.

Birbalsingh, who previously worked as the government’s social mobility tsar, told The London Standard: “If one actually did a survey on this sort of thing nationally, I think you would find that white privileged kids would be more likely to be doing that. No question.”

In recent years, a clear pattern has emerged in paediatric gender medicine: every country that has reviewed the evidence for interventions such as puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones for adolescents has found it to be exceptionally weak, and responded by shifting towards cautious, psychotherapeutic care. In sharp contrast, Nova Scotia has just announced an expansion of its paediatric gender services to ensure that youth across the province can access these controversial medical treatments.
