Johan Galtung, the father of the academic discipline known as Peace Studies, died, as he lived, in the free world that he otherwise scorned and condemned.

On Saturday, at 93, Johan Galtung, the founder of the academic discipline known as Peace Studies, died in an affluent suburb of Oslo in his native country of Norway. During his long life, he published about 150 books and received innumerable awards and honorary degrees from institutions around the world. On his death, Norway’s largest newspaper, VG, hailed him as “a pioneer and a giant.” One news website described him as “a towering figure,” “revered,” “a beacon of hope,” and a man “driven by an unwavering commitment to creating a more peaceful world.”  

The Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED) organisation, once a pioneering platform for sharing revolutionary ideas during the late 2000s and early 2010s, has receded from public conversation in recent years. Yet the resignations this week of six TED fellows over the selection of billionaire Bill Ackman as a speaker at the upcoming TED conference in Vancouver signals a deeper malaise at the organisation.

On December 26, 1969, in Flint Michigan, roughly 300 college students – almost exclusively white – gathered in a run-down dance hall called the Giant Ballroom. The ballroom was located in the heart of one of Flint’s black neighborhoods, and also one of its most violent. A bullet hole in the front door marked the spot where, the night before, a disgruntled patron had fired a shotgun into the hall inadvertently killing a black customer who was there to celebrate Christmas, and was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The attendees were members or alumni of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), the largest radical movement on university campuses during the 1960s. They had come to attend the last “National Council” meeting of SDS.

Activist Shaun King has been suspended from Instagram where he had around 5 million followers. King is probably best known for his support for BLM and for multiple instances of amplifying false allegations (see here and here) on social media. King has lately become an outspoken supporter of Palestine and critic of Israel. He claims he was suspended because of those stances on the platform.

Dutch politics got a blast from the past on Monday when a right-wing politician was assaulted. The country goes to the polls tomorrow and the hospitalisation of Thierry Baudet, attacked with a bottle in a bar in the northern city of Groningen, is a reminder of what happened to Pim Fortuyn in 2002.

After being assaulted in the weeks leading up to the Dutch elections, the flamboyant right-wing Fortuyn was then shot dead nine days before voters went to the polls. His assassin was an animal rights extremist who told a court he didn’t like the way Fortuyn talked about Muslims.

NEW: Conservative leader Thierry Baudet was sent to the hospital after being attacked with a beer bottle just two days before the Netherlands general election.
