Thousands of Germans took to the streets in several cities to protest the rise of far-right extremism and the growing popularity of the anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
At Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, people blew whistles and sang anti-fascist songs, and in the western city of Cologne, protesters carried banners denouncing the AfD.

The European Parliament’s Committee on Legal Affairs will deliberate on Thursday, January 23rd, whether to lift the immunity of left-wing radical MEP Ilaria Salis.
The request to lift the 40-year-old Italian lawmaker’s immunity was handed in by Hungary last year, following the election of Salis to the European Parliament (EP).
Ilaria Salis was arrested and imprisoned in Hungary in 2023 for participating in a series of attacks organised by the Hammerbande (Hammer Gang), a German left-wing militant group linked to Antifa. The members of the group surrounded and bludgeoned nine innocent people—who the attackers decided “looked like” neo-Nazis based on their choice of clothing—with telescopic batons and hammers on the streets of Budapest.
An Alabama man has pleaded guilty to setting off an explosive device filled with nails outside the state attorney general’s office earlier this year.
Kyle Benjamin Douglas Calvert pleaded guilty to the malicious use of an explosive device in connection with the February 24 incident, which did not cause any injuries.
When an Oregon county near Portland held self-proclaimed “journalist” Alissa Azar accountable for planning a riot in 2021, violent members of Antifa descended on a small main street. Police arrested one member for allegedly assaulting a man.
