Ontario judge discounts violent sex assault sentence for permanent resident facing deportation

Ontario judge discounts violent sex assault sentence for permanent resident facing deportation

An Ontario judge has discounted the sentence for an Ecuadorian man convicted of violently sexually assaulting a woman because he’s likely going to be deported when he gets out of prison.

Sergio Reyes Loor was convicted of sexual assault causing bodily harm earlier this year in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. A ban has been placed on the publication of information that would identify the victim. The Crown argued that a five-year prison sentence was in order for Reyes Loor, who is a permanent resident of Canada.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott takes aim at Muslim washing stations in airports

HOUSTON — For years, travelers passing through Texas’s two biggest airports have had access to small washing stations for a ritual called wudu, in which Muslims clean their hands, arms, head and feet before the five daily prayers.

Such facilities have become more common in states with the largest Muslim populations, including Texas, where on Wednesday travelers and others popped in and out of washing stations at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport. The tiled wudu room sits along an airport hall just past a vending machine, with a small sign showing a draped person kneeling.

U.K. travel ban on two European Christians persecuted for their faith is preventing one, a prominent Finnish politician, from speaking to a U.K. legislative body this week. The revocation appears to be based on a wrongful conviction of Finnish Member of Parliament Paivi Rasanen and Lutheran Bishop Juhana Pohjola for publishing a booklet discussing the Bible’s theology of male and female differences, says free speech law firm Alliance Defending Freedom.
