$5.5M daycare built with provincial funds now derelict, scavenged by thieves and damaged by flooding

A $5.5-million Winnipeg-area daycare built two years ago with provincial funds sits vacant, derelict and surrounded by weeds after being plundered by scavengers and damaged by flooding.

The non-profit group hoping to operate the daycare and an advocate for not-for-profit daycares are now pleading with the province to open the East St. Paul facility, which has yet to care for a single child.

The 74-space daycare was built in 2024 on behalf of the Peguis First Nation Real Estate Trust. It was one of 22 daycares built in Manitoba as part of a project started by the former Progressive Conservative government along with JohnQ Public, a company owned by 11 Manitoba municipalities.

Watching Harry Potter is ‘Trans Genocide’ Explains Crazy Guy From the Matrix

Remember The Matrix and Keanu Reeves running around in ‘Bullet Time’. Whatever happened to that? The end times fascists are plotting their escape from our world. Our mission is clear

When Jeff Bezos announced his plan for an opulent Venetian wedding in early 2025, many locals found the idea offensive, even obscene. A growing number of residents were struggling to find secure and affordable housing in a city overrun by tourists and Airbnb, and the billionaire was planning to, in effect, rent out the municipality for three days, forking over an estimated $50m for festivities that would clog central canals and block well-trafficked streets. Worse, Amazon’s carbon emissions were soaring, thanks to artificial intelligence and the datacentre build out – and that’s personal in Venice, where the streets already flood dozens of times a year.

Egyptian mummy removed from display out of ‘respect for her wishes’

The mummified body of an ancient Egyptian woman has been removed from display after 200 years out of “respect for her wishes”.

Curators at Manchester Museum decided to remove the 2,700-year-old remains of a woman named Asru from the public collection and place them in storage, amid a growing debate about the ethics of showing the remains of ancient Egyptians.

Asru’s body had been displayed at Manchester Museum since 1825. It was the last mummified body on public display at the museum.

Tent cities disrupt Parks Canada camping program for immigrant families

Tent cities disrupt Parks Canada camping program for immigrant families

The spread of homeless encampments across Canadian cities forced Parks Canada to cancel some overnight events designed to teach immigrant and urban families how to camp, according to an internal agency report.

The Evaluation Of The Learn To Camp Program said growing tent cities created difficulties for Parks Canada events traditionally held in accessible urban locations such as historic sites and heritage canals.

Nice that the government has provided housing for immigrants while leaving Canadians to sleep rough.
