Ailing British couple could die in Taliban custody, UN warns

Two British pensioners, imprisoned by the Taliban for more than five and a half months without charge, are in such perilous health that they could die in custody, a panel of United Nations experts has warned.

Peter Reynolds, 80, and his wife Barbie 76, had been living in Afghanistan for 18 years, running training projects, when they were picked up on February 1 with no explanation. They have spent months locked up in Afghanistan’s most notorious prison then in an underground cell of the intelligence headquarters and Peter has been chained, shackled and hit over the head.

More than 100 candidates — most in Canadian history — to run against Poilievre in byelection

Next month’s byelection in Alberta’s Battle River-Crowfoot will break the record for the most candidates on a federal ballot in Canadian history.

As of Friday, 108 candidates — mostly associated with a group of electoral reform advocates known as the Longest Ballot Committee — have registered to run for the seat.

Albanian who cannot be deported taunts Home Office with personalised number plate

An Albanian convicted burglar who cannot be deported taunted the Home Office with a personalised number plate on his £80,000 Mercedes.

Dorian Puka, 28, who has been jailed and deported twice from the UK for burglaries, filmed himself peeling the cover off his new registration plate: DO24 AMG, reflecting his name and high-end marque of the Mercedes.

He then posted a video of himself on Tik Tok driving through London onto the M25 towards the intersection with the M40 to Oxford.

Transgender doctor’s complaint that she felt ‘threatened’ by much smaller nurse in female changing room row was ‘plausible’, senior medic says

A transgender doctor complained that she felt threatened by a ‘much smaller’ nurse in the female-only changing rooms at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy, Fife, a tribunal has heard.

A senior medic in the ongoing legal action between transgender medic Dr Beth Upton and nurse Sandie Peggie, said that it was ‘plausible’ that Dr Upton could have felt threatened.

Dr Elspeth Pitt, a consultant in emergency medicine at NHS Fife, told the tribunal that Dr Upton was ‘sobbing’ following a confrontation with Ms Peggie.

Former Afghan interpreter details alleged sexual abuse by Global Affairs employee

Clutching a teddy bear and trembling through her story in the witness box, a female former Afghan interpreter who worked for Canada in Afghanistan detailed the harrowing sexual abuse she allegedly suffered at the hands of a Canadian government employee.

For four days this week, the woman, whose identity is protected by a publication ban, recounted to an Ottawa courtroom how the alleged abuse started when she was 17, shortly after moving to Canada in October 2011, and went on until 2013.

“He called me his sex toy, a whore and a bitch,” the woman said of her alleged attacker, whose family she was living with during some of the alleged abuse.

My estimates put the number of Afghan Interpreters employed by CAF at approximately 3 to 4 million.

Yorkdale shooting victim was rapper with ties to Montreal gangs: Report

The man who was shot dead early Thursday in the parking lot of Yorkdale Shopping Centre is reportedly a rapper linked to Montreal gangs.

Montreal’s La Presse reported that the victim is a rapper known as Lil Bentley, whose real name is Kashif Jamal Bentley-Jean.

When we were kids we used to head to Yorkdale just to hang around, get into some minor hijinks and head home, we were kids 10,11, 12. 

Toronto is now a city of vibrant and diverse crime scenes.

Man dies after being pulled into MRI machine by chain necklace

A man has died after suffering a medical episode when he was “drawn into” an MRI machine by a large chain around his neck, police said Friday.

The 61-year-old was at Nassau Open MRI on Wednesday when he entered an unauthorized MRI room while a scan was in progress, Nassau County Police on New York’s Long Island said in a statement. The man has not been identified by authorities.

Speeding transport driver nabbed with $4.4 million in contraband tobacco along Hwy. 401 in Kingston

… Inside, OPP and MTO officers discovered the trailer was filled with over 17,820 kilograms of contraband; fine-cut tobacco with an estimated value was $4.4 million.

According to the officer, that equates to a total federal and provincial tack loss of approximately $9.1 million.

The driver, 60-year-old Joga Singh Dhillon of Puslinch Township near Cambridge, has been charged with trafficking contraband tobacco.
