Jamie Sarkonak: It shouldn’t take 16 years to deport a foreign criminal

Gagandip Jhuty, an Indian national, should have been deported in 2009 due to his criminal history, but it was only this July that Canadian officials scheduled his flight out. Why? Because for 16 years, India refused to issue him a passport.

That’s how it works in Canada: anyone being deported needs to have travel documents on hand. So, if they entered illegally and never had such documents to begin with, they can’t be sent home until that problem is resolved. If a country doesn’t want to repatriate the deportee in question, it can simply ignore our requests — for years.

Ford government agrees to fee cancelling $100M deal with Elon Musk’s Starlink because it’s your money and they don’t give a crap how they waste it

The Ford government has negotiated a break fee to cancel its $100 million contract for Starlink internet, Global News has learned, officially ending its deal with Elon Musk-owned SpaceX.

The now-defunct agreement between Ontario and SpaceX was first signed in November to provide satellite internet to roughly 15,000 homes in the north of the province.

London Knife Crime Has Risen 86 Percent in a Decade: Think Tank

Knife crime in London rose by 86 percent between 2014 and 2024 and is highly concentrated in areas such as the West End, which features tourist destinations including Oxford Circus and Regent Street, according to a report by the Policy Exchange think tank.

Most knife crime in London involves robbery, with cellphones the most common target, according to the report. In 2024, 61.6 percent of knife crime offenses in the British capital were robberies.

The report states that “London is in the grip of a crimewave of robbery, knife crime and theft.”

Shakedown: Toronto hit with $50M class action lawsuit over decision to deny refugees shelter beds

A proposed class action has been launched against the City of Toronto on behalf of refugees, refugee claimants, and asylum seekers who were denied access to shelter beds between November 2022 and October 2023.

The lawsuit was filed on May 30 by the Black Legal Action Centre, Lewis Litigation PC, and Stieber Berlach LLP, on behalf of 40-year-old Nigerian refugee claimant Wasiu Adekanmbi, who is a member of the Black and LGBTQ+ communities.

Adekanmbi arrived in Toronto on Sept. 11, 2023 and knew no one and did not have a place to stay, the lawsuit’s statement of claim said. He’s since found work and is now living in Niagara Falls, Ont.

Video of Mayor Olivia Chow welcoming well fed Gaza “refugees” to Toronto pulled from Instagram over online abuse

Mayor Olivia Chow says she’s been forced to remove a video she posted to social media in which she welcomed a Palestinian family to Toronto, after they faced a barrage of online abuse.

In a post to Instagram on Monday, Chow criticized Israel over the deepening crisis in Gaza, saying she supports “the Canadian government’s recent condemnation” of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government “as the humanitarian disaster worsens.”

“Israel must allow Palestinians to access food, water and humanitarian aid. Famine should never be used as a weapon,” the mayor wrote in the post.

They look well fed.
