President Donald Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that Spain “came back all the way” and agreed to boost NATO payments after he ordered a U.S. trade embargo with the European country over its reluctance to contribute more to the organization.

LOS ANGELES – Law enforcement in the United States, Canada, and Europe have arrested 24 defendants – 11 of them in California – connected to three India-based transnational organized crime groups charged with a litany of criminal acts, including the assassination in Canada in 2023 of a prominent Indian political and religious figure, the Justice Department announced today.

Today’s law enforcement action – “Operation Hard Ball” – is the result of a years-long federal investigation into Indian crime syndicates that engage in racketeering, targeted killings, shootings, extortion, the trafficking of bulk quantities of narcotics across international borders, and other crimes around the world whose impact is especially felt in the Indian diaspora.

In total, 37 defendants – including two defendants who ran their global criminal syndicates while imprisoned in India – are charged across three indictments unsealed today. Those arrested in the United States – 11 in California, one in Indiana, and one in Georgia – are expected to make their initial appearances today in federal court.

Shabir Ahmed, 73, a key figure in the Rochdale grooming gang scandal, is due to be released from prison on Thursday but cannot be thrown out of Britain because of a loophole in the Immigration Act 1971.

Even though he has been stripped of his citizenship while serving prison sentences totalling more than 40 years, Ahmed is protected from deportation by a provision in the act that exempts Commonwealth citizens who arrived in the UK before 1973 from removal.

A 19-year-old Afghan man, Massoud S., was tried Monday at the Aix-en-Provence court for sexual assault against six goats, one of which died, and a 6-month-old lamb at an educational farm. He has been convicted and sentenced to 30 months in prison and a ban from French territory.

The FBI thwarted a plot targeting Sunday’s UFC event at the White House and has arrested five men, the US justice department said on Tuesday.

Part of the plan involved striking nearby buildings with explosive-laden drones and firing on “high value targets”, prosecutors alleged.

One suspect was arrested in Ohio last week, where investigators reviewed encrypted messages involving other alleged conspirators. Prosecutors said in charging documents they had allegedly “expressed ultra-religious and antigovernment sentiments”.

The Carney government signalled for months that it would pass a law to protect kids from online harms, including by banning access to social media for those under age 16. What we got instead may be the biggest threat to free expression in decades: mandatory censorship of social media and AI.

The Safe Social Media Act, Bill C-34, aims to keep kids from signing up for TikTok and Instagram, which is bad enough since it means teenagers will be censored. While many parents don’t want their teens on TikTok, others believe their 15-year-olds are mature enough.

A Georgia man is behind bars and facing charges of aggravated assault after allegedly opening fire on a family gathering last weekend.

According to authorities in Lee County, deputies responded to reports of a shooting around 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 7th. When deputies arrived at the scene, they found a “large gathering” as well as one individual suffering from a gunshot wound who was transported to a local hospital.

Canada has given the U.S. and Mexico official notice that it wants the free trade deal between the three countries to be renewed.

In a letter to his American and Mexican counterparts, Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc said the country is seeking renewal of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) when it comes up for review on July 1.

The US has spoke of separate Mexico/Canada deals.

Restaurant chain Tim Hortons is planning to dial back its use of Ottawa’s Temporary Foreign Worker program to staff restaurants and commit to hire up to 10,000 local workers as it embarks on a push to expand the number of Tims locations across the country this year.

The chain’s new approach to hiring is a stark reversal from its previous tenor. For years, Tim Hortons was one of the biggest proponents of the TFW program, a controversial immigration stream that expanded in popularity during the pandemic and came to symbolize some of the failings of the Trudeau-era immigration strategy.

Bulgaria wins 70th Eurovision contest with Dara and Bangaranga

Bulgaria has won the 2026 Eurovision song contest after singer Dara swept to victory with the song Bangaranga.

The 27-year-old singer’s triumph is a first victory in the 70-year history of the song contest for Bulgaria, which only joined Eurovision in 2005 and sat out the last three editions.
