The Local Sheriffs Gearing Up to Help Trump Carry Out Mass Deportations

FREDERICK, Md.—If President-elect Donald Trump ramps up deportations as promised, he will have a strong ally in Chuck Jenkins, the longtime Republican sheriff of Maryland’s Frederick County.

“I’m willing to support the president 100%,” said Jenkins, 68, gravel-voiced with a gray buzzcut. “I want to do more, within the law.”

That prospect is spreading fear in immigrant circles, advocates say, and drawing mixed views from residents in this growing county, which backed Democrats in the last two presidential elections. But Jenkins, once dubbed among the nation’s 10 toughest immigration sheriffs by Fox News, sees Trump’s imminent return to the White House as a mandate for a more assertive approach.

President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to slap a 25% tariff on Mexico’s goods unless it stops fentanyl trafficking and illegal migration risks setting the trade partners on a collision course over an intractable challenge for both countries.

Ahead of the new trade negotiations, Mexico’s greatest weakness has been its historic inability to confront the powerful drug gangs that control about a third of the country. Mexico has had success stopping immigration over the past year, but ending drug smuggling might be an impossible ask, in part because of strong demand in the U.S.

Fentanyl is cheap to produce and easily smuggled. In some large areas of Mexico, organized crime groups dominate local and state officials. Different attempts to fight the gangs, sometimes with U.S. support, have led to violence at home without making any dents on the drug business.

Advisers to Trump have pushed for using federal pressure — such as withholding federal funds — against municipalities that don’t cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on deportations, the people said. The people spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe efforts not yet made public.

Is Donald Trump serious about tariffs? This has been the question hanging over not just world markets but the whole world of economics.

The popular wisdom had become that he wasn’t really that serious, and the key bit of evidence for that was his nomination of hedge fund investor Scott Bessent as his Treasury Secretary, someone seen as a moderate when it came to tariffs compared with others whose names were floated for the role.

The answer overnight, though, was pretty brutal. Yes, he is serious, and in the most unexpected way. By choosing to target Mexico and Canada as well as China, he is confirming threats made on the campaign trail that appeared the most fanciful.

The Capitol Hill GOP Is – As Usual – The Weakest Link

Too bad Trump can’t be the dictator on Day One that the commies claimed he would be because the Republicans in Congress seem committed to making things much more difficult than they have to be. They need to get on board or get out of the way. We’ve lost one nominee already, and they are showing that familiar wobbliness that they always get about Pete Hegseth and several others. They have announced no clear plans for the first hundred days, and when someone does not tell you the plan, you can assume that there is no plan. Plus, they seem to be going back to their old habits of selecting congressional leadership not based on core attributes like merit, loyalty and lib owning. Trump 2.0 is focused and eager to keep his promises and make America great again. The GOP Congress seems far too focused on business as usual.

Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy took to the pages of the Wall Street Journal last Wednesday to outline what they styled “The DOGE Plan to Reform Government.” DOGE is, of course, an acronym for the prospective Department of Government Efficiency whose mission will be to reduce the size of the administrative state and strip its unelected bureaucrats of the enormous power they unlawfully wield over the American people. Musk and Ramaswamy explain that President-elect Trump has asked them to take on this task and why: “The entrenched and ever-growing bureaucracy represents an existential threat to our republic, and politicians have abetted it for too long.”
