Since the 2021 election, there’s been no safer bet in Canadian politics than wagering that Jagmeet Singh would ultimately back the Liberal Party. With Justin Trudeau stepping down as leader, we shouldn’t take for granted that this dynamic is necessarily going to change. Singh has repeatedly demonstrated a willingness to compromise his stated principles in exchange for concessions—or even the appearance of influence. Now the stage is set for a new Liberal leader to test this pattern.
Jagmeet Singh is about to be relegated to a footnote in Canadian history. And the footnote will probably read like a joke.
We can reasonably expect it to look something like this: “Canada’s scandal-riven Justin Trudeau era, from 2015 to 2024 also contained an odd era for the country’s ‘always a bridesmaid, never a bride’ New Democratic Party, which, from 2017 on, was led by Jagmeet Singh. After leading the party’s fall to fourth-place status in the House of Commons in 2019, Singh entered into a supply and confidence agreement with Trudeau’s minority government in 2022. He was frequently accused of using the agreement to procure his full government pension.
It has been a most difficult year for Selina Robinson, who was ousted from B.C.’s NDP cabinet for her comments during a forum on Israel. She says she had long known the NDP had an antisemitism problem but has become estranged from her progressive peers since Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel.

OTTAWA—NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has accused his political rivals of putting their electoral prospects before protecting Canada’s democracy, the day after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau unveiled bombshell allegations that there are Conservatives with ties to foreign meddling.
That the prime minister dropped those revelations at a public inquiry peeling back the layers of his own Liberal government’s response to foreign interference was not lost on Singh, who said Thursday that both Trudeau and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre “have, at many times, chosen to put their party before the country.”
OTTAWA – NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says it’s very disturbing that Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre won’t get the top-level security clearance needed to view classified documents on foreign interference.
Singh said party leaders need to be briefed on top-secret information, noting the allegations this week that Indian agents played a role in the extortion, coercion and murder of Canadian citizens on Canadian soil.

She was kicked out of the New Democrat caucus at Queen’s Park for insubordination last fall, but the party has left the door open for Hamilton Centre MPP Sarah Jama to be its candidate in next provincial election.
NDP Leader Marit Stiles confirmed Wednesday that the party’s executive is preparing an analysis on “electoral implications” involving Jama, who has been sitting as an Independent and has stated publicly she plans to seek re-election as one.
